Spaceballs: The New One Gets Update with Mel Brooks Returns

The first official trailer for Spaceballs: The New One finally debuted at CinemaCon on April 15, delivering the classic satire fans have waited decades for. This latest installment features franchise original writer-director Mel Brooks, who is a remarkable 99 years old at this point, ensuring the humor remains authentically his own. In the sneak peek, viewers get a hilarious glimpse of parodies targeting popular sci-fi and fantasy properties like Star Wars and Harry Potter. Even more bizarrely, there is a moment where Na'vi from Avatar are seen at a urinal next to the quintessential Spaceballs chief enforcer Lord Dark Helmet.

Other franchises that are expected to be parodied in this sequel include Star Trek and Alien, promising a broad range of cultural references. Brooks, who couldn't attend the convention in person, sent a video message where he officially announced the sequel's title as Spaceballs: The New One. While specific plot details remain under wraps, the trailer is packed with enough funny touchstone moments for fans to chew on immediately.

Cast Returns and New Faces Join the Galaxy

One thing we do know is that some of the movie’s killer original cast will return alongside the legendary Mel Brooks himself. The returning lineup includes Rick Moranis, George Wyner, Daphne Zuniga, and Bill Pullman, bringing back their iconic roles to the screen. However, there will certainly be new folks joining the fray to expand the universe further.

New cast members include:

  • Keke Palmer
  • Lewis Pullman
  • Anthony Carrigan
  • Writer Josh Gad

You might remember Brooks teased this project back in June 2025 with a classic Star Wars-style text crawl. The crawl read, “Thirty-eight years ago, there was only one Star Wars trilogy... But since then there have been… a prequel trilogy, a sequel trilogy, a sequel to the prequel, a prequel to the sequel, countless TV spinoffs, a movie spinoff of the TV spinoff, which is both a prequel and a sequel […] But in 38 years, there has only ever been one Spaceballs. Until now…”. This clever setup emphasizes that while other franchises have fragmented, the original Spaceballs legacy remains unique.

Release Date, Directors, and Studio Commitment

The new film is directed by Josh Greenbaum and written by Gad, along with Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit. During his video announcement at CinemaCon, Brooks also revealed the movie’s theatrical release date: April 23, 2027. The project will be released by Amazon MGM Studios, a studio that recently debuted footage from Masters of the Universe, Highlander with Henry Cavill, and The Thomas Crown Affair starring Michael B. Jordan at the same event.

Additionally, they showcased footage for Beekeeper 2 with Jason Statham and How to Rob a Bank with Nicholas Hoult. The studio also made a public commitment to put 15 movies in theaters per year, which they claim they are on track to hit by 2026. This update marks a significant moment for the franchise, proving that Spaceballs: The New One is more than just a fan dream—it is a confirmed reality coming to cinemas soon.
