Steam Machine Is NOT A Console, Valve Says

Valve has finally confirmed the pricing and release date for the new Steam Machine, with the base model starting at $1,050 when it launches on June 30. In addition to the price and launch date, the company released a detailed FAQ to clarify several key points, including its stance on how the Steam Machine should not be categorized as a traditional game console.

The Steam Machine Is Not a Console

Valve explicitly stated that the Steam Machine is an extension of PC gaming, not a console. The company emphasized that traditional consoles like the Xbox or PlayStation are usually sold at a loss, with manufacturers like Microsoft and Sony relying on software and service revenue to offset the cost. In contrast, the Steam Machine operates under a different model.

"Games sold for a console might be locked in to the hardware," Valve explained, "but that’s not the case for the Steam Machine." This distinction is crucial, as it highlights the open nature of the platform, which Valve believes is more beneficial for consumers in the long run.

Valve also pointed out that the PC gaming ecosystem has historically driven innovation in both hardware and software. The company believes that giving players the freedom to choose the games and hardware they prefer is a core strength of the PC gaming market. However, Valve clarified that the Steam Machine is not the only solution — it's just one option among many.

Price Increases Due to Market Conditions

Valve originally wanted to price the Steam Machine lower, but rising component costs — particularly due to the "RAM-aggedon" — forced the company to increase the price. The base model starts at $1,050, with options going up to $1,428 for a 2TB version that includes the Steam Controller and swappable face plates.

This price point aligns with a broader trend in the gaming industry, where console and PC components have become increasingly expensive. The prices of Xbox and PlayStation consoles have already gone up, and Nintendo is set to increase the price of the Switch 2 in September.

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma recently addressed the rising costs, stating that gaming consoles have become too expensive and that "radically different" models may be necessary. She emphasized that it's not feasible to expect mass audiences to pay thousands of dollars for new consoles.

Preorder Challenges and Early Impressions

If you're looking to preorder a Steam Machine, be prepared for a queue that reflects lessons learned from the Steam Controller's initial launch. The Steam Machine is expected to be a powerful and user-friendly gaming PC, but early reviews suggest it may not match the performance of a custom-built system at the same price point.
