The upcoming launch of Subnautica 2 feels like a minor miracle. After months of surrounding turmoil, the highly anticipated undersea survival sequel is set to enter Early Access next week on May 14.
While much of the recent news has focused on the loud and public legal battles between publisher Krafton and the founders of developer Unknown Worlds, the developers themselves have remained relatively quiet. However, in a recent YouTube devlog, Subnautical 2 design lead Anthony Gallegos provided a rare glimpse into the internal atmosphere at Unknown Worlds during these turbulent times.
Surviving Development Turmoil
Gallegos was diplomatic but honest about the challenges the studio has faced. While he avoided specific details regarding the ongoing lawsuits, he acknowledged that the development process hasn't been seamless.
"As some of you know, the team has weathered a lot," Gallegos stated. He emphasized that despite these "rough patches," the core mission of the studio remains unchanged: to deliver the highest quality Subnautica experience possible.
According to Gallegos, two primary factors prevented the team from faltering during the most difficult periods:
- The intrinsic excitement of working on a legendary franchise.
- The unwavering support and enthusiasm from the Subnautica community.
"When it was at its hardest, two things kept us going," Gallegos said. "One is the excitement of working on the next Subnautica game... The other is you. Your endless enthusiasm and excitement drives us to deliver something worthy of the name."
What to Expect from the Subnautica 2 Early Access Launch
Players should prepare for a long-term development journey. Gallegos confirmed that Subnautica 2 will remain in Early Access for at least two years. While he described the day-one launch as the "most ambitious starting point" the studio has ever had, he issued a realistic disclaimer regarding the state of the game.
Because the title is in its early stages, players can expect:
- A strong, playable foundation.
- Potential bugs and an unpolished experience.
- An incomplete story arc.
However, purchasing the game at this stage offers long-term value. Gallegos noted that buying into Early Access grants players access to all content leading up to the 1.0 release and beyond. He also highlighted that supporting the launch is a direct way to support the employees at Unknown Worlds who are bringing the sequel to life.
Subnautica 2 will be available for $29.99 when it launches next week.
