Peter Sarsgaard (The Batman) is joining the cast of The Last of Us Season 3, according to Deadline. The actor will be playing a brand new character who has not appeared in the games. However, his role reportedly has major implications.
Sarsgaard will play Amon, the leader of the Seraphites. It's unclear how much screen time Sarsgaard will have, but the Seraphites have a significant role in The Last of Us Part II.
Seraphites are a group of religious extremists, largely known for being extremely lethal and intolerant. In the game, they can be seen torturing people and using more primal weaponry, such as bows. They're expected to have a larger role in Season 3, as Abby's story will take center stage. In The Last of Us Part II, Abby joins forces with two Seraphite kids who have been cast out by the cult – Lev and Yara. Fans have speculated that Season 3 may also shine a brighter light on the cult, potentially giving them a whole storyline that wouldn't have been seen in the game.
Sarsgaard is one of many talented actors joining the show this season. The Last of Us Season 3 has also enlisted the help of Patrick Wilson, who is playing Abby's father, Jerry. Although he has minimal screentime in the game, Jerry is one of the most significant characters in The Last of Us story. Jason Ritter is also joining the cast as another new character, a WLF soldier named Hanley.
The Last of Us Season 3 is expected to be the show's final season, as it will cover the second half of The Last of Us Part II. As of right now, there are no plans to continue the show past the story that's featured in the games. Perhaps if Naughty Dog finally gets around to making The Last of Us Part III, a fourth season will be on the table, but that is likely many years away from happening.
