These New Releases Gave Game Spending A Much-Needed Boost In March

March 2026 proved to be a landmark month for the industry, as several high-profile titles pushed game spending to impressive new heights. According to recent data from Circana, a surge in consumer interest helped drive a massive sales period across the United States.

How New Releases Boosted Game Spending

The arrival of heavy hitters like Crimson Desert, MLB The Show 26, and Pokemon Pokopia acted as a primary catalyst for this growth. Mat Piscatella, Senior Director at Circana, revealed that total game spending in the US reached a staggering $5.3 billion in March 2026. This represents a significant 12% increase when compared to March 2025.

While software led the charge, the hardware sector experienced an even more dramatic transformation. Video game hardware spending grew by 69%, reaching $500 million compared to the previous year.

Hardware Trends and Platform Performance

The recent surge was largely driven by dominant performance in the console market. The following trends highlight the current state of hardware sales:

  • Nintendo Switch 2: Functioned as the primary driver for overall gains, ranking as the best-selling hardware platform across both units and dollars for March and the 2026 year-to-date.
  • PlayStation 5: Continued its steady climb with spending increasing by 3% compared to March 2025, maintaining its position as the second-ranked platform in both units and dollars.

The Nintendo Switch 2 also holds a prestigious historical position, remaining the second fastest-selling hardware platform in the US since Circana began tracking data in 1995.

"Nintendo Switch 2 drove the overall gain, while PlayStation 5 spending increased by 3% compared to March 2025," Piscatella wrote. The data confirms that the Switch 2 remains a powerhouse, with the PS5 ranking second across both measures and time periods.
