Tom Holland Talks MCU Spider-Man Future, Teases 'Setting Up the Next Chapter' for Miles Morales
Tom Holland has opened up about his future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and shared insights into how he wants to help transition Spider-Man into a new era — potentially one that includes characters like Miles Morales. Speaking with Empire, Holland discussed his upcoming fourth solo Spider-Man film, Brand New Day, and revealed how he pitched the storyline involving Peter Parker's personal transformation, a concept he called "Spider-Puberty."
Looking beyond Brand New Day, Holland hinted that he already has an idea for how he'd like his version of Spider-Man to exit the MCU — possibly after introducing a new character to take over the mantle. "For whoever's next, whether that is a Miles Morales or a Spider-Gwen or a Spider-Woman or something like that, I would love to be a part of setting up the next chapter," he said.
While the exact duration of Holland's new Marvel contract remains unclear, it's widely believed that Brand New Day will kick off a fresh trilogy for his take on the superhero. In a production note following the film's filming, Holland expressed his hope to return for several more projects. "Whatever that looks like, I don't know," he said. "But if I could do what Downey did for me, then I would be so content swinging off into the sunset."
Here, Holland is referencing the mentorship provided by Robert Downey Jr.'s character, Tony Stark, during his early days as Spider-Man, particularly in films like Captain America: Civil War and Spider-Man: Homecoming. However, it's still uncertain whether the MCU's version of Miles Morales will appear before the conclusion of Holland's second trilogy.
Regardless, Holland is taking on a more senior role in the production of Spider-Man films, with his story ideas being incorporated into Brand New Day. "This is the first time in my tenure as Spider-Man that I was kind of welcomed into the writers' room," he said. "We would meet once every two weeks to pitch ideas and discuss our ambitions and what we wanted to try and do."
Holland's initial pitch for the film, titled "Spider-Puberty," revolved around the idea of Peter Parker losing control as his life changes. "What happens if Peter Parker is losing control and things are changing?" he explained. "‘Spider-Puberty’ was my tagline pitch to the studio — which was immediately shot down. But they liked the kernel of the idea and it grew into what we have in the movie now."
The Brand New Day trailer has already hinted at some kind of transformation for Holland's Spider-Man, with scenes showing him breaking out of a webbed cocoon. Fans have speculated that the film might explore the Venom symbiote or see Peter evolve into the many-limbed Man-Spider — but the exact nature of the transformation remains a mystery.
Several references to Miles Morales have already appeared in MCU Spider-Man films, though they've mostly been Easter eggs. Meanwhile, Sony has been developing its own version of the character in the Spider-Verse films and has also featured him as a playable protagonist in Insomniac's Spider-Man PlayStation series. Until then, Brand New Day will hit theaters on July 31.
