The Videogame Market Is as Big as Ever, with PC Leading Growth

The videogame market is experiencing unprecedented growth, with global games revenue surpassing the $200 billion mark in 2025. According to the latest quarterly Global Games Market Report from Newzoo, the industry closed the year at $201.6 billion, marking a 9.1% increase year over year. This figure not only exceeded previous projections but also highlights the resilience of the gaming sector despite ongoing challenges.

PC Gaming Leads the Charge in Growth

One of the most notable trends in the videogame market is the dominant role of PC gaming in driving growth. Newzoo reported that PC revenue hit $43.6 billion, a 12.0% increase compared to the previous year. This surge is attributed to the diverse range of games available across various price points. High-profile titles like Battlefield 6 have been balanced out by more affordable, critically acclaimed games such as Clair Obscur. Additionally, microtransactions have played a significant role, with platforms like Roblox generating substantial revenue.

In contrast, console revenue reached $44.7 billion, but with a much smaller growth rate of 2.8% year over year. While this is still a notable figure, it pales in comparison to the explosive growth seen in the PC sector. Mobile gaming continues to dominate in terms of revenue, with $113.3 billion generated—more than double that of PC and console combined. However, its growth rate remains slightly lower than that of PC gaming.

Challenges and Uncertainties Ahead

Despite the impressive figures, the videogame market faces several challenges. The rising cost of hardware, often referred to as the RAMpocalypse, is making it more difficult for new players to enter the market. Analysts predict that upcoming titles like GTA 6 could have a significant impact, potentially acting as an atom bomb in terms of market influence. However, Newzoo does not expect the PC sector to have another stacked year like 2025, even with a September packed with highly anticipated games.

The industry is also grappling with extreme consolidation, massive layoffs, and the resumption of console wars. With companies like Microsoft cutting games and studios, it's unclear whether the current influx of cash will be used to sustainably advance the industry. Meanwhile, unions continue to push for their voices to be heard, adding another layer of complexity to the already volatile landscape.

Looking Ahead

As the videogame market continues to evolve, the PC sector's growth stands out as a beacon of opportunity. With a wide array of games catering to different budgets and preferences, the PC gaming landscape is more vibrant than ever. However, the industry's future will depend on how companies navigate the current challenges and ensure that growth is both sustainable and inclusive.
