Another Vital Figure Has Left Bandai Namco

Bandai Namco's Tekken team has experienced a wave of high-profile departures in recent months. Starting with assistant director Yohei Shimbori in August 2025, followed by Executive Director and "face of Tekken" Katsuhiro Harada, who recently announced a new studio in partnership with SNK, the latest exit comes from another key figure in the franchise. Kohei Ikeda, known to fans as "Nakatsu," has officially confirmed his departure from Bandai Namco after over 20 years of service.

Ikeda's career at Bandai Namco has been deeply intertwined with the Tekken series, where he held the roles of game director and chief producer for Tekken 8. He also contributed to other notable projects such as Soulcalibur IV and the Project X Zone series. In a post on X, shared in both English and Japanese, Ikeda expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work with the company he long admired.

"Becoming part of the company I had always admired—[Bandai] Namco—was truly a dream come true," he wrote. "Dedicating ourselves wholeheartedly to game development together remains one of the most cherished experiences of my life."

Though Ikeda did not provide a specific reason for his departure, he emphasized that this move does not signal the end of his journey in game development. He plans to "continue to take on new challenges" in the industry, suggesting that his expertise will remain relevant in the evolving gaming landscape.

The Future of Tekken Under New Leadership

Tekken 8 has been a commercial success for Bandai Namco Games, with strong sales and a robust DLC pipeline that includes the recently-announced guest character Yujiro Hanma. However, the game has also sparked significant debate among long-time fans regarding its gameplay direction. With Ikeda’s departure, speculation is mounting about who will take the lead in shaping the future of the Tekken series.

The loss of a figure as influential as Nakatsu may have far-reaching implications for the franchise. His deep involvement in both the creative and production aspects of Tekken 8 meant that his absence could lead to a shift in the series' development philosophy. While Bandai Namco has not yet announced a successor for Ikeda’s role, the gaming community is closely watching for any updates on the next phase of the Tekken saga.
