Why Studios Should Embrace GenAI

Game developers should embrace GenAI to optimize workflows, according to The Witcher 3 director Konrad Tomsazkiewicz. In a recent interview, the veteran developer shared his vision for how generative technology can assist studios without displacing human talent.

Tomsazkiewicz confirmed that his new studio, Rebel Wolves, utilized generative AI during the early stages of their upcoming title, The Blood of Dawnwalker. However, he was clear about one boundary: no AI-generated assets should be present in the final game.

Streamlining Development with AI Voices

During a discussion attended by Eurogamer, Tomsazkiewicz explained that Rebel Wolves used generative AI to create voices "in the early stage" of development. This method helps the team determine if certain elements are working before committing to expensive permanent assets.

The decision to embrace GenAI in this context provides several logistical benefits:

  • Testing NPC dialogue and tone during prototyping.
  • Managing the high costs associated with multi-language support in RPGs.
  • Preventing "really expensive" re-recordings if changes are required mid-development.

Supporting Workers, Not Replacing Them

The director emphasized that the goal of using these tools is to help support existing workers rather than replace them. Using AI early on avoids creating unnecessary pressure on the development team by reducing the risks of inefficient, costly shifts in direction.

By utilizing these tools for initial testing, Rebel Wolves can navigate the complexities of modern RPG development while ensuring human creativity remains at the forefront of the final product.
