Xbox Delays Fable to 2027
Xbox has officially confirmed that its upcoming Fable reboot will be delayed to February 2027. The long-awaited RPG was initially scheduled for a fall release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, but the new date reflects a strategic shift in Microsoft’s release calendar. The delay comes as Xbox aims to balance its packed lineup of 2026 releases, including the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI, which is now set for November 19, 2026.
In a statement, Xbox emphasized that the year ahead will be filled with exciting titles for players. From Halo: Campaign Evolved and Gears of War: E-Day to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 and Star Wars: Galactic Racer, the console brand is preparing for a busy season. However, to ensure Fable receives the attention it deserves, the team has opted to push its release into early 2027. The game will be highlighted during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7, where fans can expect a major look at the upcoming title and other key projects.
Internal Speculation and Strategic Considerations
The delay follows reports that Microsoft had internally considered postponing Fable, though the official Fable social media account previously denied any such plans, reaffirming the fall 2026 release window. Jeff Grubb of Giant Bomb previously mentioned concerns at Microsoft about Fable launching in the same year as GTA 6, which could affect its visibility and sales. However, the new date now positions Fable for a release after GTA 6, potentially reducing competition and allowing for a more focused marketing campaign.
Despite the delay, Microsoft continues to solidify its release schedule for other major titles. These include Halo: Campaign Evolved and Gears of War: E-Day, both of which are expected to debut in 2026. During the Xbox Games Showcase, fans will likely get more details about these projects, as well as potential updates on InXile’s Clockwork Revolution, Undead Labs’ State of Decay 3, and Hideo Kojima’s OD. Additionally, Activision recently announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, set to launch on October 23.
Fable’s Ambitious Features
Earlier this year, IGN spoke with Playground Games, the developer behind Fable, about their efforts to revive the beloved British RPG series. The team revealed several ambitious features, including 1,000 fully voiced NPCs, and the ability to marry every single one. These elements aim to bring a fresh, immersive experience to the Fable universe, making the 2027 release even more anticipated.
With the new date now set, fans will have more time to prepare for Fable’s return. The delay also gives the development team additional time to refine the game and ensure it meets the high expectations of the series’ long-time supporters. As the Xbox Games Showcase approaches, all eyes will be on Microsoft to see what other surprises and updates await in its upcoming lineup.
