Zelda Fan Ditches Ocarina of Time Unreal Engine Remake After a Decade of Work
A dedicated Zelda fan has decided to halt their long-running project to recreate The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time using the Unreal Engine, following the recent news that Nintendo is set to release an official remake of the beloved N64 classic. CryZENx, a YouTuber known for his deep dive into retro gaming projects, has spent over a decade working on an unofficial PC version of the iconic game. He shared updates on his progress through numerous YouTube videos, and even offered a playable demo that has somehow evaded legal action from Nintendo.
The End of an Era for the Unreal Engine Project
CryZENx announced the end of the project on his Patreon, stating, "I'm sorry that I had to disappoint. It's better to just stop the project for now or I would have been disappeared... because of Nintendo ninjas." His concern stems from the potential legal risks that could arise now that Nintendo has officially announced its own remake of Ocarina of Time for the upcoming Switch 2. With the official version in the works, the need for an unofficial Unreal Engine remake diminishes significantly.
Fans who have supported CryZENx over the years may be disappointed, but the YouTuber has expressed gratitude for their support. He wrote, "What would you want to see on YouTube? A very last video of my Project with Full gameplay of Chapter 2/3 for the very last video for the OOT project? Please let me know." He also thanked both longtime supporters and newer followers, acknowledging the decade-long journey and the importance of their contributions.
CryZENx has not ruled out future projects, and he is currently seeking input from his audience on which other retro games should be remade in Unreal Engine. Options include Zelda: Twilight Princess, Minish Cap, Donkey Kong 64, and Metroid Prime Hunters. While he doesn't charge for access to the project, he does run a Patreon account where supporters can pledge money to help fund the development. Supporters get access to behind-the-scenes content, updates, and even private calls through various tier options, with the highest tier reaching up to $127 a month.
Nintendo's Official Ocarina of Time Remake
The official remake of Ocarina of Time was confirmed during this month's Nintendo Direct after a major leak and months of speculation. The initial teaser showed the game's 3D art style and confirmed that the remake will launch sometime in 2026. Although a now-removed product description hinted at a faithful remake, fans are eagerly awaiting more details.
CryZENx's decision to stop the project highlights the challenges that fan developers face when dealing with officially licensed content. Despite the risks, his work has been a testament to the passion and dedication of the gaming community. While his Ocarina of Time project is now on hold, the future of other potential Unreal Engine remakes remains uncertain.
