007 First Light's Massive $200 Million Budget Revealed
Developer IO Interactive's upcoming 007 First Light has reportedly had a budget exceeding $200 million, with the project taking seven years to complete. This information was uncovered in a report by the Danish Broadcasting Corporation, which noted that the James Bond video game cost 1.3 billion Danish krone — roughly $202 million — to develop.
According to TV 2, the Danish news outlet, this makes 007 First Light the most expensive entertainment product in the country’s history. When IGN reached out to IO Interactive for comment, the studio did not respond.
How Does This Compare to Other Triple-A Titles?
The $200 million budget for 007 First Light aligns with typical figures for high-profile triple-A games. For example, Bungie's recently released Marathon was said to have a budget of over $250 million. Similarly, Concord's initial development deal was estimated at $200 million, according to Kotaku. In 2023, documents related to an Xbox Federal Trade Commission case revealed that The Last of Us: Part II and Horizon Forbidden West each cost more than $200 million to develop.
Some games, however, have budgets that far exceed 007 First Light. A court document revealed that Activision spent $700 million on Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War over its life cycle. At the top of the list is GTA 6, which is estimated to have cost between $1 billion and $1.5 billion so far, according to Take-Two Interactive.
Development Timeline and Early Success
IO Interactive officially revealed the 007 First Light project in late 2020, but if the Danish Broadcasting Corporation's report is accurate, the studio had already begun development a year before the announcement.
The game launched on May 27 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S. Despite the $200 million development cost, the game has already seen strong sales. Just two days after its release, on May 29, IO Interactive announced that the game had sold 1.5 million copies in 24 hours, making it the studio’s fastest-selling game ever.
According to Rhys Elliot, head of market analysis at Alinea Analytics, Steam accounted for 500,000 of those sales, generating $25 million in revenue alone. This early success is notable, especially given that the game does not include a version for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, which is expected to launch later this summer.
