If you were holding out hope for the return of NFL 2K or MLB 2K, it is time to stop holding your breath. In a recent interview with Game File's Stephen Totilo, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick addressed the uncertain future of these much-loved sports franchises, and the news for fans of 2K's football offerings is disheartening.
Why 2K's NFL Game Is Dead
According to Zelnick, the creative vision required to bring a new football title to life simply failed to materialize. When asked about the status of a potential NFL game from 2K, the CEO noted that previous attempts fell short of expectations.
“What we hoped would come to fruition creatively did not,” Zelnick stated. “Some of the stuff we tried to do didn’t work out creatively.”
While it remains unclear if this was due to a specific business disagreement with the NFL or a failure to develop a compelling gameplay loop, the result is the same: no new football title is currently in development. The last major entry in the series was Visual Concepts' ESPN NFL 2K5, which remains a fan favorite since its 2004 launch. Since then, EA Sports has maintained an exclusive rights agreement with the NFL, leaving the Madden franchise as the sole provider of professional football simulation.
No Return to MLB 2K for Take-Two
When the conversation shifted toward a possible revival of the MLB 2K series, Zelnick was even more definitive. He effectively ruled out a return to baseball gaming, citing significant financial setbacks from previous endeavors.
“Probably not,” Zelnick said regarding a baseball comeback. “We had a tough history with MLB. It’s no secret there [that] we lost a great deal of money with them. And I don’t like losing money."
The history of 2K's involvement in baseball is marked by both dominance and decline:
- Market Dominance: The 2K Sports MLB deal ran from 2006–2012, effectively removing competitors like EA's MVP Baseball.
- Financial Struggles: Consistent financial losses and poor critical reception plagued the later entries.
- The End of an Era: The franchise was officially cancelled in 2014 following the release of MLB 2K13.
Potential for Future Football Innovation
Despite the lack of a current project, Zelnick did leave a small window open for football. While he isn't looking to return to baseball, there is hope that 2K could revisit the NFL space if a viable opportunity arises.
Because EA Sports holds exclusivity over high-end football action simulations, any future 2K project would likely take an "arcade-y" approach. This could mirror the style of titles like MLB The Bigs, focusing on an exaggerated, over-the-top version of the sport rather than a direct competitor to the simulation-heavy Madden series. For now, however, fans of both football and baseball will have to continue looking elsewhere for their sports gaming fix.
