Valve has officially confirmed that the Steam Controller sold out much faster than the company originally expected, leaving many enthusiasts empty-handed while scalpers take advantage of the shortage.
The hardware launched on May 4 with a retail price of $99. However, it didn't take long for Valve’s official storefront to display "out of stock" notices. This supply vacuum has allowed resellers to flood the market, with some listings seeing prices inflated to well over $200.
Valve Responding to Steam Controller Shortages
Valve has addressed the sudden lack of availability directly, expressing frustration over the stock situation and the impact on customers.
"Steam Controller ran out faster than we anticipated, and we hate that not everyone who wanted one was able to get it," Valve stated in a recent update. While the company confirmed they are actively working on replenishing inventory, they have not yet provided a specific date for when more units will be available. "We’re working on getting more in stock and will have an update on expected timeline soon."
The Demand for Unique PC Hardware
The high demand is understandable given the critical reception of the device. Previous reviews highlighted the Steam Controller as a top-tier option for both casual players and hardcore enthusiasts, noting its ability to offer unique, high-end features at a price point much lower than its competitors.
As fans wait for more stock, attention is also turning toward other hardware in Valve's lineup:
- Steam Machine: Hardware details and pricing remain unannounced.
- Steam Frame: Expected to launch alongside Steam Machine, but currently lacks a release date.
- Future Updates: Valve programmer Pierre-Loup Griffais previously indicated that news regarding these products is expected "soon."
While the Steam Controller is currently difficult to find at MSRP, players hoping to secure one will need to keep a close eye on Valve's official announcements for the next restock timeline.
