On paper, the AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT 8 GB makes a lot of sense. After being impressed by the 16 GB variant last year, seeing a version that is substantially cheaper—and arguably the most affordable current-gen card on the market—felt like a win for budget builders.

However, dropping the VRAM to 8 GB carries consequences. While it isn't a dealbreaker in every scenario, certain high-setting titles will hamper this card's performance significantly more than its primary rival, the Nvidia RTX 5060 Ti 8 GB.

Performance and VRAM Constraints

In my initial benchmarks, the competition wasn't always clear-cut. In Black Myth: Wukong at 1080p, the AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT 8 GB actually stayed within three frames of the RTX 5060 Ti on average. But when things get demanding, the limitations become obvious.

In Cyberpunk 2077, the wheels really come off for the AMD card. When VRAM becomes a bottleneck, the performance drops can be massive. While the Nvidia card handles these constrained situations with more grace, the RX 9060 XT tends to struggle in open-world titles and heavy ray-tracing scenarios.

Technical Specifications at a Glance

  • GPU: Navi 44 (RDNA 4 architecture)
  • VRAM: 8 GB GDDR6
  • Memory Bandwidth: 322.23 GB/s
  • Boost Clock: Up to 3130 MHz
  • MSRP: $299

The hardware gap is evident in the memory subsystem. While both cards feature 8 GB of RAM, the RTX 5060 Ti utilizes faster GDDR7 over a 128-bit bus, providing 448 GB/s of bandwidth. In contrast, this AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT 8 GB relies on slower GDDR6, resulting in a significantly lower bandwidth of 322.23 GB/s.

Asus Prime Review: Thermals and Build Quality

For this review, I tested the Asus Prime Radeon RX 9060 XT OC Edition. Interestingly, this model features a large, tri-fan, 2.5-slot cooler that feels almost overkill for this chip. Despite the higher sustained "game clock" of 2760 MHz on this specific board, the card remains incredibly cool under pressure.

The thermal performance is one of the standout features of the Asus Prime model. Even when pushed, it runs exceptionally quiet and stays well within safe temperature ranges. This makes it a prime candidate for small form factor (SFF) builds where heat management is critical.

Key considerations before buying:

  • Buy if:
    • You are on a strict budget and cannot stretch to the more expensive RTX 5060 Ti.
    • You prioritize excellent thermals and want a card that runs cool for SFF builds.
  • Don't buy if:
    • You primarily play at high settings and higher resolutions.
    • You are an open-world fanatic who spends most of your time in titles like Cyberpunk 2077.

Ultimately, the AMD Radeon RX 9060 XT 8 GB is a solid budget contender. If you need a modern card that can handle gaming without breaking the bank, it serves its purpose well—just be aware of the VRAM ceiling when choosing your settings.
