Robots are essentially just computers that can walk around, which is why we are starting to cover them more regularly. There is so much to keep up with: clips of machines doing things that are weird, funny, alarming, or—rarely—actually useful. Whether they are playing video games or acting as butlers, we need to keep a close eye on these developments.
The era of mad scientists hiding their creations in labs is over. Today, creators lead them directly into crowded public spaces and press the "on" button. If you find yourself crushed by a toppling machine, congratulations—you have just participated in an unconsented beta test. April 2026 brought plenty of mechanized mayhem, so here are April's top 5 robots.
A Look Back at April's Top 5 Robots
5. Mecha Supreme
Sony recently built a robot named Ace specifically to play ping pong. It aims to solve the modern problem of endless human-based table tennis matches. While Ace isn't quite at a professional level yet, it managed to defeat three out of five "elite" players.
The design is impressive, though there is a catch. According to The Guardian, Ace sidesteps some tricky aspects of table tennis by using an eight-jointed arm on a movable base rather than standing on two legs. That is quite the understatement for how much it cheats physics.
The Rise of Unpredictable Machines
4. Bad Dogs
A robot dog featuring Elon Musk's face was recently spotted wandering the streets of San Francisco. If you have a fear of dogs with human faces, this might be your nightmare. This particular "dogbot" is one of our top 5 robots this month, and it is part of an interactive exhibit by the artist Beeple.
The exhibit features several unsettling creations:
- A dogbot with Elon Musk's dead-eyed head.
- Robots bearing the heads of Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos.
- Machines that walk around and "poop" NFTs.
3. Return to Sender
Watching a robot efficiently pack itself into a box for shipping or charging is initially cool. However, the experience quickly shifts from impressive to horrifying as you watch its movements. It is a strange sight that makes you wonder if this will become a popular model.
If I could fold myself into a grocery bag like that, I would certainly save a lot of space in my bedroom. There would be no need for a king-sized mattress if I could just tuck myself away in a corner.
2. Marathon Mangle
Humanoid robots are known for falling over, but this particular incident was unusually violent. During a Beijing half-marathon, a robot performed about as well as a human runner in a high-pressure race by immediately faceplanting.
The aftermath was even more gruesome. Instead of simply lying there, the bot began thrashing with such intensity that it flung its own arm into the air. It looked less like a trip and more like the machine had been hit by a shotgun, until it finally lay still and was carried away on a stretcher. This is certainly one of the most intense entries in our top 5 robots lineup.
1. Field Freakout
On April 27, during an opening ceremony in Xinjiang, a robot malfunctioned spectacularly. The machine began flailing around a crowded field, throwing kicks and punches at dancers. It fell on its face, only to leap back up and continue attacking "electronic ghosts."
The chaos only ended when someone ran out to smother the machine with a jacket to lead it away. I no longer fear Skynet taking over the world. Instead, I fear being fatally struck by the flailing limbs of a robot having a mechanical tantrum.
