Bungie isn't immediately making Destiny 3, is planning layoffs, reports Bloomberg

The recent announcement that Destiny 2 will cease receiving live-service content updates has sparked speculation among fans that Bungie is performing a controlled demolition to pave the way for Destiny 3. However, according to sources speaking to Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier, the studio is not immediately pivoting to a sequel.

Bungie does not yet have a specific Destiny 3 project greenlit for the development team to begin work on. Instead, the company is facing significant internal changes, including planned layoffs that will impact its workforce as it restructures its future strategy.

No Immediate Sequel, But Future Projects Loom

While the cessation of live-service updates might suggest an imminent Destiny 3 announcement, the reality is more complex. None of the current reports rule out the eventual development of a Destiny 3 or another title within the universe. However, if Bungie is not even past the pitching and prototyping stage, fans should expect a long wait before seeing anything beyond Marathon.

Schreier’s report indicates that the studio plans to invest more heavily in Marathon rather than rushing a new sequel. This strategic shift highlights Bungie’s current focus on stabilizing its live-service offerings and preparing for the next phase of its incubation period.

Strategic Shifts and Workforce Reductions

Bungie has faced considerable challenges in delivering new projects recently. In 2024, the company laid off over 200 employees following the cancellation of the Destiny spin-off titled Payback. Former Bungie CEO Pete Parsons stated that the studio had been stretched too thin across "several incubation projects," a term that has resurfaced in today’s announcement.

The company is now moving on from Destiny 2 to "begin work incubating" its next games. This period of incubation is critical for shaping Bungie’s future direction. Key points to consider include:

  • Marathon’s Performance: The extraction shooter Marathon has launched to positive reviews, but its sales figures remain below the expectations of both Bungie and Sony.
  • Content Expansion: To attract more players from the Arc Raiders audience, Bungie plans to add a more casual PvE mode to Marathon in an upcoming update.
  • Long-Term Planning: Without a greenlit Destiny 3 project, the immediate future of the franchise remains focused on Marathon and the incubation of new IPs.

What Comes Next for Bungie?

The studio has reached out to clarify its post-Destiny 2 plans, and Bungie has been contacted for further comment. As the industry watches closely, the balance between launching new IPs and managing existing live-service titles will define Bungie’s next chapter. While Destiny 3 remains a possibility, its timeline is currently uncertain, leaving players to anticipate what Bungie incubates next.
