Developer Pearl Abyss has officially released the Crimson Desert update 1.04.00, bringing significant improvements to the game. This massive patch introduces much-requested difficulty settings, major storage upgrades, and even brand-new pets for players to collect. It is easily one of the most substantial content drops since the game's successful launch in March.
New Difficulty Settings in the Crimson Desert Update
For players looking to change how they experience Pywel, Pearl Abyss has introduced three distinct difficulty levels. While Normal remains the standard experience, players can now choose a more relaxed or much more punishing journey.
The new settings include the following mechanical changes:
- Easy Difficulty: Reduces player damage taken and lowers enemy health, aggression, and speed. It also extends the timing windows for parry and dodge.
- Hard Difficulty: Increases damage taken by the player and boosts enemy health, speed, and aggressiveness.
- Hard Combat Mechanics: In Hard mode, food item effects only trigger after the consumption animation is complete, preventing players from spamming healing. Additionally, players face reduced invincibility during rolls and tighter parry windows.
Pearl Abyss also noted that certain bosses now feature additional combat patterns on Hard difficulty. This pairs perfectly with the upcoming boss rematch feature, which will allow you to fight specific bosses of your choosing.
Essential Storage and Inventory Upgrades
Managing loot is much easier thanks to new inventory category tabs and massive storage improvements. The addition of the Sturdy Gatherables Chest is a game-changer for collectors. This chest, which can be purchased from furniture shops and integrated into your housing system, features a whopping 1,000 slots.
Crucially, materials stored in this chest can be used for crafting or refinement even if they aren't currently in your active inventory. This should save players an enormous amount of time during progression.
Furthering these quality-of-life improvements are the new Kuku Cooler and Enhanced Kuku Cooler items:
- The Kuku Cooler can be obtained through a quest.
- The Enhanced Kuku Cooler must be crafted.
- Both can be placed via the housing system to store food and ingredients.
- Like the chest, ingredients in these coolers can be used for cooking without being carried in your inventory.
Expanded Animal Companions and Pets
If you are looking to build an animal army, this Crimson Desert update has plenty of new options. Pearl Abyss has officially added birds as pets, providing even more variety to the game's ecosystem.
The patch also introduces five new types of cat pets and allows players to rename their horses and other companions. Additionally, a new item slot for pets has been added, allowing them to utilize new items that grant unique abilities and behaviors.
Combat Refinements and Bug Fixes
Combat balance has seen significant tweaks as well. Bosses are no longer immune to player attacks while performing powerful moves, making encounters feel more dynamic and less frustrating. Furthermore, the characters Kliff, Damiane, and Oongka have all received new skills to experiment with.
In a humorous turn, Pearl Abyss has officially turned a bug into a feature. Previously, cats could remain on a player's shoulder indefinitely due to a glitch. While the issue was "fixed," the developers added a new item that allows cats to stay on your shoulder for an even longer period of time for those who enjoy the behavior.
With such a massive amount of unannounced content appearing in this patch, players are still discovering what lies within. This level of post-launch support is remarkable for a triple-A, single-player open-world adventure.
