Taming the Wilds of Crimson Desert: Bears, Goats, and More

When Crimson Desert first launched, the community voice was deafening in its singular, primal desire: "Why can't I tame a bear and ride it?" It is a deeply relatable aspiration. Most of us have spent years dreaming of such an experience, only to be held back by the mundane constraints of society, legality, and the very real danger of Harvey refusing to put on a saddle.

Fortunately, Crimson Desert allows players to finally realize these wild dreams. While developer Pearl Abyss previously introduced legendary wolf and bear mounts, obtaining them required completing complex quest chains or engaging in questionable morality by murdering bears while their cubs watched. You could not tame these wild creatures directly. That dynamic has now shifted dramatically.

The New Mount Taming System

According to the latest patch notes, Pearl Abyss has fundamentally altered the game’s interaction with wildlife. "Certain animals can now be registered as special mounts after gaining their trust," the update confirms. This system allows players to forge bonds with creatures that were previously untouchable.

The roster of tameable beasts is impressively diverse:

  • Bears
  • Boars
  • Wolves
  • Deer
  • Mountain Goats
  • Kuku Birds
  • Iguanas
  • Raptors
  • Camels
  • Lions and Tigers

For the majority of these creatures, the process involves increasing their trust level by feeding them meat. This mechanic mirrors the dog-taming system already present in the game, offering a familiar progression curve. However, Pearl Abyss notes that specific animals will "require unique methods to tame," suggesting that some encounters will demand more than just a steak.

Quality of Life and Resource Management

Beyond the animal kingdom, the patch addresses a significant pain point for veteran players: equipment upgrading. Players can now extract materials from their gear, allowing for respecs if they wish to pivot their build.

The refund system is partial but functional:

  • Special Materials: 100% refund.
  • Common Materials: 70% refund (including iron ore, copper ore, and bloodstones).

This is a crucial quality of life improvement. Given that a massive portion of time in Crimson Desert is spent mining, collecting, and gathering resources to engage with its sprawling systems, being able to recover a significant portion of those investments is a welcome change.

A Developer on the Move

The speed at which Pearl Abyss is implementing these features remains impressive. It feels like every other week brings a new feature, such as the recently added bird taming, seamlessly woven into the game’s already dense DNA. Despite the rapid pace of updates, the studio’s marketing director maintains that this is standard business operations for the ambitious development team.

As players rush to test these new mechanics, the line between tamer and tamee continues to blur. Whether you are riding a majestic lion or a peculiar mountain goat, Crimson Desert has officially opened its doors to the wild.
