Doctor Who Finds New Streaming Home on AMC+

The future of the iconic sci-fi franchise is shifting again, as Doctor Who is set to land on AMC+ starting next month. This development marks a significant pivot for the series following the collapse of its previous partnership with Disney, offering fans a new digital base for the show’s extensive history.

BBC Studios has officially confirmed that 13 seasons and 175 episodes will begin streaming via AMC+ from June 11 onwards in the United States. This collection represents the entirety of the franchise’s "New Who" era, originally broadcast between 2005 and 2022. The deal encompasses the eras defined by the tenures of Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and Jodie Whittaker.

What’s Included in the AMC+ Deal

For long-time viewers, this streaming arrangement provides comprehensive access to the modern iteration of the show. However, there are specific exclusions based on the timeline of production deals.

The current AMC+ agreement covers the era before the BBC’s short-lived funding deal with Disney. Consequently, the following are not included in this initial rollout:

  • Episodes produced under the Disney partnership.
  • David Tennant’s recent return as the Fourteenth Doctor.
  • Any content featuring the current Thirteenth Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa.

This distinction is crucial, as it separates the classic New Who era from the most recent chapters of the franchise’s timeline.

Speculation on Future Funding and Production

Today’s announcement has fueled widespread fan speculation that AMC+ could be lined up as the series' next major U.S.-based financial backer. This potential partnership follows the departure of Disney as a co-funding partner, a decision that previously sparked the show's current production hiatus.

Currently, the BBC has only confirmed it is self-funding a single special episode set to air this Christmas. Fans widely expect this special to wrap up lingering plot threads, including the anticipated return of Billie Piper’s character.

Beyond this confirmed special, the future of Doctor Who remains somewhat mysterious. However, industry observers and fans alike expect another co-funding deal to be announced before too long, potentially stabilizing the show's production schedule.

AMC+ Embraces the Whoniverse

The move to AMC+ is being positioned as a strategic expansion for the streaming service. Courtney Thomasma, Executive Vice President of AMC Global Media’s linear and streaming products, highlighted the strategic value of the acquisition.

"Doctor Who strengthens AMC+’s position as a destination for premium genre storytelling – curated franchises defined by iconic worlds, passionate fan bases and enduring cultural impact," Thomasma stated. "We’re thrilled to welcome the Whoniverse into our home of fandoms, giving longtime fans a reason to return while inviting new audiences to discover one of television’s most beloved franchises."

Production Timeline for the Next Special

While the streaming deal is confirmed, the immediate future of the show’s production is still in flux. Filming on the upcoming Doctor Who Christmas special has not yet begun.

Rumors suggest that production will shoot in early fall, with a rapid turnaround aimed at meeting the December broadcast deadline. As the dust settles on the Disney split, AMC+ appears poised to become the primary digital hub for Doctor Who content in the U.S. market, at least for the classic modern era.
