Dragon Quest 12 Development Restarted From Scratch After “A Lot Of Hurdles”
As Dragon Quest marks its 40th anniversary this year, the long‑awaited Dragon Quest 12 Development Restarted From Scratch announcement comes with a fresh update. The title, once called The Flames of Fate, now carries a brand‑new name—Dragon Quest 12: Beyond Dreams—and promises a revitalised experience after a series of setbacks.
A Fresh Start for the Next Mainline Title
During a recent livestream, executive producer Yosuke Saito explained the decision:
“We’re hard at work on Dragon Quest 12, but due to a reshuffle of the team and a restart of development, it’s going to be a bit longer until it’s in your hands. Work on the original version, The Flames of Fate, hit a lot of hurdles along the way. But as we kept talking with Yuji Horii and pinned down what a mainline Dragon Quest game should look like, we decided to move things around and start over from scratch. It was a major decision, but I believe it was the right one to ensure the next Dragon Quest game will be one that all you fans of the series will really love.”
Saito also revealed a colorful preview, featuring new characters, expansive landscapes, and fresh monsters. While the art direction remains rooted in the iconic style of Akira Toriyama, the late creator’s influence continues to shine through in every frame.
Key highlights from the sneak peek:
- New protagonists with interconnected backstories
- Diverse environments ranging from misty forests to towering citadels
- Reimagined monster roster that leverages classic design elements

What Fans Can Expect Moving Forward
Development faced a rocky patch in 2024 when series producer Yu Miyake stepped down amid repeated delays, leaving the project in a limbo that stalled updates. The franchise, however, has continued to thrive with spin‑offs. The newest addition, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Withered World, is slated for launch on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and Switch 2. This creature‑collecting game blends familiar mechanics with a distinct Dragon Quest flair, offering a fresh take for longtime fans and newcomers alike.
With the restart, players can anticipate a title that stays true to the core JRPG experience while embracing modern innovations. The renewed focus on design, storytelling, and polish signals that the next mainline entry will deliver the adventure many have been waiting for.
