Fans of indie horror are facing some disappointing news today as the highly anticipated Paranormal Activity game, Paranormal Activity: Threshold, has officially been cancelled.
Brian Clarke, the solo developer behind the breakout hit The Mortuary Assistant, released a statement confirming that the project will no longer be released. The cancellation stems from a difficult decision regarding development timelines and quality control.
Why the Paranormal Activity Game Was Cancelled
According to Clarke, the primary issue involved a lack of extended development time. While the developer felt more time was necessary to polish the experience, Paramount—the owner of the Paraneral Activity IP—did not offer an extension.
This left Clarke with two difficult options:
- Release a compromised, subpar game that failed to meet his standards.
- Cancel the project entirely to avoid releasing something he wasn't proud of.
Ultimately, Clarke chose to cancel the title rather than compromise the integrity of the franchise.
What We Lost with Paranormal Activity: Threshold
Announced in 2024, Paranormal Activity: Threshold promised to bring the terrifying found footage aesthetic of the film series to life. The gameplay loop was designed around a couple discovering their new home is haunted, utilizing a camcorder to document the supernatural events as they unfolded.
The game featured several ambitious mechanics intended to increase replayability:
- Multiple timelines that players could explore.
- Unique variables that changed with every individual playthrough.
- Multiple branching endings based on player actions.
Clarke’s previous work, The Mortuary Assistant, was heavily influenced by the Paranormal Activity films, making him a natural choice for this adaptation. His ability to create constant, eerie tension and a looming sense of demonic threat made fans particularly excited for this new venture.
The Future of the Paranormal Activity Franchise
While the cancellation is a blow to gamers, the film franchise continues to move forward. A new Paranormal Activity film is currently scheduled for release on May 21st, 2027. Some speculate that Paramount may have been pushing for a simultaneous release to create marketing synergy between the game and the motion picture.
While we won't get to experience Clarke's vision for Threshold, fans of the genre can still look back at previous entries like the 2017 title Paranormal Activity: The Lost Soul by VRWERX, which remains available on PC and PlayStation 4.
