Timeline for Patch 8.3 and Evercold
During a wide-ranging keynote presentation at Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest, Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida shared significant news regarding the game's future hardware support. The FFXIV Director explains plans to sunset the PS4 version of the MMORPG, though the timeline suggests players have some time remaining before the transition is complete.
The upcoming expansion, Evercold, is slated for a January 2027 release alongside Patch 8.0. Yoshida confirmed that this expansion will be fully supported on PlayStation 4 hardware. However, the sunsetting process is expected to begin during the post-launch update cycle.
Yoshida noted that support should remain stable for several years: "We currently believe we'll probably be okay up until about [Patch] 8.3," which would likely arrive in early 2028.
Why the FFXIV Director Explains Plans to Sunset the PS4 Version
The decision is driven by the massive scale of the game's content and its recent technical upgrades. As the FFXIV Director explains plans to sunset the PS4 version, he pointed toward storage and performance as the primary obstacles.
Key factors contributing to this hardware transition include:
- Storage Capacity: The sheer size of the game is becoming too large for the PS4 hard drive.
- Visual Overhauls: The massive changes brought by the Dawntrail expansion (Patch 7.0) have strained older systems.
- Hardware Limits: Yoshida noted that while Sony engineers helped extend the lifespan, it will soon be "impossible to physically contain all of FFXIV on the PS4 hard drive."
While there are no immediate changes coming to the system requirements on PC, the aging PS4 hardware is struggling to keep up with the game's evolution. Yoshida even gave players a heads-up regarding their next upgrade: "You got two years to save up for a PlayStation 5!"
Addressing Switch 2 and Service Rumors
In a roundtable interview at Fan Fest, Yoshida also addressed confusion surrounding the move to new platforms. He clarified that while the team is encouraging a transition to PS5, there is no immediate plan to shut down the PS4 service or shift exclusively to the Switch 2.
"The reason we are looking to transition from PS4 to PS5... is because of the hardware limitations," he explained. While the FFXIV Director explains plans to sunset the PS4 version, he emphasized that they are not ceasing support right away, but rather encouraging a gradual move to newer hardware as the game reaches its technical limits.
