Former Pinterest team redesigns email with Extra — and it’s actually good

The modern email inbox has transitioned from a streamlined communication tool into a cluttered graveyard of forgotten tasks and promotional noise. For years, the industry has attempted to "fix" this via incremental updates—bolting AI agents or improved filters onto an aging architecture without addressing structural decay. However, a new venture from former Pinterest engineers seeks to abandon traditional email elements entirely with Extra, a tool designed to be more human-centric.

Moving Beyond the Traditional Inbox

Developed by BuildForever, the startup's first product, Extra moves away from the standard paradigm of subject lines, folders, and tags. Instead, it centers the user experience around a "Today" tab designed to act as an actionable overview of one’s life. This interface prioritizes information that requires immediate attention, effectively turning a chaotic stream of data into a curated, real-time dashboard.

The philosophy driving this shift stems from the frustration of navigating an overwhelming digital load. Naveen Gavini, co-founder and CEO—formerly a high-level executive at Pinterest—noted that the sheer volume of personal email often becomes a "wall of to-dos" that is too exhausting to process after a day of professional communication.

To combat this, Extra utilizes intelligence to extract critical information from the background noise of standard mail. The application organizes incoming data into custom categories that reflect the user's actual life, such as travel plans, finances, or family activities. This isn't just about sorting; it is about recontextualizing your digital existence.

Key Features of Extra

While the underlying technology relies heavily on machine learning to categorize and summarize data, the team is intentionally avoiding the "AI-first" marketing trap. In an era where every startup claims to be an all-encompassing personal assistant, the focus remains on solving tangible user problems rather than promising a digital deity.

The intelligence remains largely invisible, working under the hood to facilitate features that prioritize utility over novelty:

  • The Today View: A curated list divided into "what needs action," "what's happening today," and "good to know."
  • Daily Cleanup: Tools to mass-unsubscribe from marketers or delete entire sender histories with a single swipe.
  • News Tab: A visual, headline-driven interface for newsletters, similar to high-end news aggregators.
  • Events & Shopping: Automated extraction of calendar invites and the transformation of promotional emails into an attractive, image-heavy storefront.

This structural shift extends to how brands interact with users. In the Shop tab, rather than burying promotions in a "Promotions" folder where they are easily missed, the app presents product photos and details in an aesthetically pleasing format. This approach seeks to give consumers control over their consumption without being overwhelmed by the delivery method.

The Verdict on Email Reimagined

Early testing suggests that this structural overhaul is yielding significant results. Beta testers have already collectively unsubscribed from over two million emails per year, with millions of messages successfully transformed into digestible summaries.

While the product currently functions only with Gmail, the polished nature of the interface suggests a highly capable tool that understands the fundamental failure of modern inbox design. As the rollout begins via an invite-only system on iOS and web, the tech industry will be watching to see if BuildForever can truly compete with established giants.
