Fumito Ueda Unveils gen Atlas as Official Title for New Game
Legendary video game developer Fumito Ueda has revealed the official title of his upcoming game, gen Atlas, during Summer Game Fest. The game was previously known as “Project Robot” and is the first title from Ueda’s new studio, genDESIGN. This marks a significant step for the creator of iconic titles such as Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian. gen Atlas is set to release on PS5, Xbox Series X & S, and PC via the Epic Store. This is the first time a Ueda game will not be exclusive to PlayStation, following his departure from Sony during the development of The Last Guardian and the subsequent closure of Japan Studio.
A World of Wonder and Mystery
The setting of gen Atlas is described in a press release that evokes the familiar tone and themes of Ueda’s previous works. The release states:
“Without knowing why, you awaken on an abandoned planet. Before you lies a vast, silent world. Colossal structures stretch over endless plains, deserted facilities, and an ever-changing sea. The remnants of some grand design litter the planet’s surface. As you journey deeper into this strange world, a colossal robot awaits. Its overwhelming power opens paths to places once beyond reach, transforming your conception of the world. Across an endless expanse of time, the remnants of those forgotten constructs begin to move once more…”
The description paints a picture of a desolate, mysterious world filled with colossal structures and ancient technology. It seems to echo the atmospheric and emotionally resonant environments that have become a hallmark of Ueda’s work.
A New Era for Fumito Ueda
Ueda expressed gratitude for the support from fans, saying, “The team and I are grateful to all the fans who’ve been eager to learn more about our game. Their passion and enthusiasm has always motivated and inspired us. We hope to share an experience that inspires moments of quiet wonder and discovery.”
This sentiment aligns with the developer’s history of crafting games that are not only visually stunning but also deeply emotional and thought-provoking. Fans of Ueda’s previous titles will be excited to see how his creative vision continues to evolve with gen Atlas.
No Release Date or Window Given
Despite the excitement surrounding gen Atlas, no release date or window has been announced. This is a familiar scenario for fans of Ueda’s work, as his previous game, The Last Guardian, took nine years to develop and was released in 2018. With gen Atlas now in development, fans are hoping that the wait won’t be as long this time. The game’s multiplatform release also signals a new chapter for Ueda’s career, one that is no longer confined to Sony’s PlayStation ecosystem.
