Gaming's New Lara Croft on TV's New Lara Croft

Veteran video game voice actress Alix Wilton Regan is officially stepping into the boots of Lara Croft, but she won’t be the only one representing the character soon. Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner is also scheduled to portray the legendary adventurer in Prime Video’s upcoming adaptation of the series.

A Dual Identity for the Iconic Adventurer

We had the opportunity to speak with Alix Wilton Regan, who expressed being “really honored to have been trusted with this iconic British character.” When discussing the transition between mediums, Regan shared her personal connection to the new screen face of the franchise.

"I actually know Sophie personally and she will be the most perfect on-camera Lara Croft that you could imagine. She's going to be wonderful," Regan noted. She believes the television series requires a certain level of prestige, stating, “It did need another iconic British actress to take it on... So Sophie, to me, is a very natural choice.”

Regan even added a bit of flair to her description of Turner: “She also looks like a Grecian goddess, if you've ever met her. And Lara? Lara's hot, guys. So let's have a really hot, really talented, iconic British actress playing her as well, you know?”

Handling the Comparison

With two different versions of the character arriving nearly simultaneously, comparisons are inevitable. However, Regan remains unfazed by the potential scrutiny from fans.

"I feel fine with it. I understand video games. I work predominantly in the video game world and I love it,” she said. She also offered a pragmatic take on audience reception: “Some people will love my games, some people will hate them, some people will love the TV show, some people will hate it. That's okay. We're all entitled to like what we like to dislike."

The Future of Tomb Raider in Gaming and Television

The arrival of these new performers coincides with a massive era of transition for the franchise. At last year's The Game Awards, it was revealed that the next-gen title from developer Crystal Dynamics is titled Tomb Raider: Catalyst.

Published by Amazon Game Studios, Catalyst is slated for a 2027 release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X and S. Meanwhile, fans can look forward to Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis later this year—a reimagining of the original game built using Unreal Engine 5. Both projects will feature Regan as the voice of the character, marking a departure from Camilla Luddington, who voiced Lara in the 2013-2018 reboot trilogy.

Regan is no stranger to high-profile roles. Her impressive gaming resume includes:

  • The Female Inquisitor (Dragon Age: Inquisition and Dragon Age: The Veilguard)
  • Samantha Traynor (Mass Effect 3)
  • Alt Cunningham (Cyberpunk 2077)
  • Aya (Assassin's Creed Origins)

While she was also set to play Joanna Dark in the Perfect Dark reboot, that project was unfortunately canceled during a recent round of industry layoffs.

What to Expect from Prime Video’s Adaptation

The television side of the franchise is shaping up to be a heavyweight production. Amazon previously released a first look at Sophie Turner as Lara Croft this past January, showcasing an aesthetic heavily inspired by the classic era, complete with dual thigh holsters and red-tinted sunglasses.

The creative team behind the series is equally star-studded. Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag) is serving as creator, writer, executive producer, and co-showrunner alongside Chad Hodge (Good Behavior). Adding to the prestige, Jonathan Van Tulleken (Shōgun) is set to direct.
