The Rise of AI Content in S&box
The successor to Garry’s Mod, S&box, is facing significant backlash due to an influx of automated content. As the Garry's Mod creator wants to push 'AI slop' off the S&box main page following a period of mixed Steam user review ratings, the developer is looking for ways to protect human ingenuity. This surge in low-effort content has become a central point of contention for the community.
Since its debut in 2006, Garry’s Mod has been a cornerstone of the Steam platform. Utilizing Valve’s Source engine, it empowered players to build everything from role-playing servers to iconic modes like Prop Hunt. The original title remains highly successful, largely because it has maintained a $10 price point since its launch 20 years ago.
The legacy of the original game is built on several key pillars:
- A low entry price for nearly two decades.
- High levels of player freedom and sandbox experimentation.
- A community-driven ecosystem similar to Roblox.
Now, S&box has arrived using a heavily modified version of the Source 2 engine, but its recent release has been marred by players' concerns over "AI-infested" content and the presence of the NFT/crypto community.
Combating 'AI Slop' on the Main Page
Garry Newman, the creator behind the project, is actively working to ensure that S&box AI slop does not overshadow human talent. In a statement to Rock Paper Shotgun, Newman clarified that the team at Facepunch Studios intends to prioritize manual creation and protect the platform's integrity.
"Low quality, obvious AI-created slop is going to be a growing problem in every creative outlet," Newman stated. "We don't encourage using AI to be creative. We don't encourage using AI to create games for you. But we do acknowledge that it's a good learning tool and it's a good productivity tool. We'll be taking action to promote human creativity and push obviously AI-created slop off the main page."
While Newman intends to demote low-effort content, it remains unclear if AI-generated content will be removed entirely or simply relegated from the primary discovery feeds. This is a critical distinction for a platform that allows creators to publish their work as standalone games on Steam.
The Challenges of Moderation and Sustainability
The influx of automated content presents significant hurdles for the developers as they manage a growing user-generated hub. There are several risks facing the future of the platform:
- Moderation Difficulty: The increased popularity of AI may make it extremely difficult to moderate effectively.
- Community Alienation: If AI, NFTs, or crypto drive a sizable portion of the community, Facepunch may face backlash if they move to restrict those elements.
- Content Flooding: There is a growing concern that the ability to publish standalone games could open the floodgates to even more AI-generated games on Steam.
Ultimately, the team at Facepunch Studios must decide if they are willing to risk losing certain audiences to ensure their vision for a human-centric creative platform remains intact.
