God of War Laufey Director Addresses Fan Skepticism

God of War Laufey's director, Ariel Lawrence, has acknowledged the skepticism surrounding the game's recent reveal, expressing hope that fans will give it a chance. The game was unveiled as the "one last thing" during this week's PlayStation State of Play, generating both excitement and backlash. Some fans are unsure about Faye, Kratos' wife, being the main character instead of the legendary God of War protagonist himself. Others feel the game doesn't sufficiently diverge from Kratos' established journey, especially with its use of the same one-shot camera style as the last two entries in the series.

Lawrence shared her thoughts with GameSpot, explaining that she sees this story as something fresh and hopes fans will embrace it. "I understand the skepticism," she said. "I hope they will give it a chance and be excited to play. I think for me it’s just, is it fun? Is it an adventure that I haven’t been on before?" She also emphasized the challenge of maintaining surprise in an era where many expect to know exactly what's coming next. "I think it’s just so hard to be surprised today. Everybody always knows exactly how it’s going to play out. So I’m hopeful that this is a place where we can still have some mystery."

The Franchise's Legacy and New Directions

In a separate interview with GamesRadar, Lawrence acknowledged the deep connection fans have with the God of War franchise, which has traditionally centered around Kratos. Even unexpected voices, like Domino's Pizza, have weighed in on the idea that a God of War game without Kratos feels off. However, Lawrence sees the strong reactions—whether positive or negative—as a sign that people truly care about the series.

"We have to honor that everybody has their connection with a God of War story," she said. "And I think that a lot of people have a lot of different opinions, so some of them are hesitant, some of them are all in, and I think for me, I'm just happy that everybody cares about this." She added that if the game had received lukewarm responses, it would have been more disheartening. "But if people have feelings, great, I hope to win over the skeptics in the future."

Sony Santa Monica has confirmed that Kratos' story is far from over, with more adventures planned for the character. Laufey won't be replacing Kratos but rather expanding the God of War universe. While the next chapter for Kratos remains unclear, Laufey may mark the end of the Norse saga. The events of Ragnarok seemed to conclude that era, but Laufey runs parallel to the last two games, suggesting it could be the true conclusion and potentially set the stage for what's next for Kratos.

In an extensive interview with IGN, Lawrence and Cory Barlog, director of the 2018 God of War and head of creative at Sony Santa Monica, shared more details about the studio's plans for the game and the God of War franchise as a whole. The conversation may help answer some lingering questions fans have about Laufey.

God of War Laufey is set to release on PS5, though an exact release date has not yet been announced.
