On average, our moon is roughly 238,855 miles away from Earth. If you attempted to drive there at the UK's national motorway speed limit of 70mph, it would take over 3412 hours—or about 142 days—for a one-way trip alone. While that is an unfathomable distance, it pales in comparison to Venus, which can be up to 24 million miles away. However, the recent Artemis 2 mission has proven that humans (and gamers) can cover even more ground.

Comparing the Artemis 2 mission to Death Stranding 2

NASA's recent Arlemis 2 mission, which saw astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen fly around the moon, completed a historic journey covering approximately 700,237 miles (1,126,922 km). To one-up this achievement, Kojima Productions decided to compare the lunar flight to the efforts of delivery drivers in Death Stranding 2's post-apocalyptic America.

Between April 1 and April 10, players on PS5 and PC covered a staggering distance during their delivery missions. The stats speak for themselves:

  • Total player walking distance: 969,703 miles
  • Distance lead over NASA: Over 270,000 miles
  • Mission duration: 10 days

A massive feat of digital endurance

It is important to note that this data only counts manual walking and does not include any vehicle usage, such as the cruiser or monorail. While players will almost always prefer using a vehicle in Death Stranding 2, these porters chose to move their digital legs to power through the wasteland. In doing so, they covered much more ground than the state-of-the-art spacecraft used in the Artemis 2 mission.

Achieving this record is even more impressive when you consider the game's current player base. The PC version is only a month old, and while it launched with just under 58,000 concurrent players on Steam, the number had dropped to between 20,000 and 30,000 during the recorded window. It wasn't exactly prime time for breaking records, but gamers still managed to outpace NASA.
