Spiders has officially confirmed that its operations will cease immediately. This news comes during a turbulent era for the gaming industry, which has seen numerous studios face closures or significant talent loss due to widespread layoffs. It is now official: the GreedFall developer is shutting down.

A History of Success in the "AA" Space

Spiders is a French video game developer that has been active since 2008. While the studio initially carved out a niche by helping port titles to the Xbox 360, they eventually transitioned into developing original intellectual properties during the 2010s.

The team became well-known for operating in the "AA" space, focusing on high-quality, mid-budget productions. Their track record includes several notable milestones:

  • Developed the successful GreedFall RPG series.
  • Achieved over 2 million copies sold for GreedFall within its first three years.
  • Released a sequel that entered early access in 2024, with a full release arriving just last month.

Why the GreedFall Developer Is Shutting Down

The news that the GreedFall developer is shutting down follows a period of intense financial instability for its parent company, Nacon. Just weeks prior to the recent full release of their latest title, Nacon filed for insolvency and attempted to find a buyer for Spiders.

Unfortunately, no buyer was found to take over the studio. As a result, the team has confirmed that the GreedFall developer is shutting down and will cease all functions immediately.

The Future of GreedFall and Studio Assets

While the studio's closure is immediate, there is some clarity regarding existing content. Spiders took to their X page to provide an update on the future of GreedFall: The Dying World DLC, stating:

"After a long period without clear answers, we have received confirmation that Spiders is being liquidated. This means the company as a whole no longer exists. We'll cease our functions immediately. The planned DLC will release via Nacon, and then-- well, that's it. We're sorry that it's come to this and would like to thank each and every one of you for your support over the years. If you have any questions or run into issues with your games, please contact Nacon directly as we'll no longer be able to reply."

At this time, it remains unclear if any of Spiders' assets or intellectual property will be sold off or utilized by Nacon in the future. Given that GreedFall: The Dying World received a mixed reception from both critics and fans, the fate of the franchise remains uncertain.
