Guild Wars 3 Won’t Have “Hidden” Subscriptions Like Battle Passes

Guild Wars 3, the upcoming MMORPG from developer ArenaNet, will not feature a paid subscription, nor will it include battle passes or other paid seasonal systems. This decision is part of the studio's broader vision for the next entry in the Guild Wars franchise, announced during Summer Games Fest 2026.

In a recent blog post, ArenaNet’s studio head Colin Johanson outlined the core pillars guiding the development of Guild Wars 3. One of these pillars is the continuation of the franchise's long-standing commitment to being free of subscription fees. This approach has been a defining characteristic of Guild Wars since its debut in 2005, setting it apart from the traditional MMO model that often relies on monthly subscriptions.

Johanson emphasized that many live-service games and MMOs have moved toward "hidden" subscriptions through optional packages that obscure the cost from players. Systems like paid battle passes and seasonal reward tracks, while seemingly optional, function similarly to subscriptions in disguise. ArenaNet is explicitly rejecting this model for Guild Wars 3.

"When we say Guild Wars 3 won't have a subscription fee, we mean it," Johanson said. "No monthly fees and no battle pass subscription fees. Just buy the game and play when you want. If we earn your trust and you feel we're delivering experiences you love, we'll have expansions and other things you can buy from us if you think they're worth the investment."

The studio also clarified that Guild Wars 3 will not feature any pay-to-win elements. However, players will have the option to spend money on cosmetic items and other non-competitive perks. Additionally, spending money on account-related services and time-saving convenience items will be allowed, but these features will not provide an unfair advantage over players who invest their time.

A New Take on the MMO Experience

Respecting the time and investment of players is another key focus for ArenaNet. Johanson noted that with so many game options available today, the team wants to create an MMO that is accessible and enjoyable for all players, regardless of how much time they can dedicate to the game. They aim to craft a "new take on the MMO" that doesn’t feel like a second job and can be enjoyed by players who play every day or only a few hours a week.

While details on the gameplay of Guild Wars 3 remain sparse, Johanson mentioned that the game will fall somewhere between the original Guild Wars and Guild Wars 2. The team is exploring what the next evolution of an MMO might look like in an era where the lines between traditional MMOs and live-service games are increasingly blurred.

"Guild Wars 3 lands near the middle of the MMO spectrum, which supports the goals we have for our movement and combat systems," Johanson said. "While it fits the definition of an MMORPG significantly more than Guild Wars Reforged does, it doesn't try to replicate the large-scale gameplay pillars that so uniquely define Guild Wars 2."

Currently, not much else is known about Guild Wars 3 beyond its planned beta in Fall 2027 and its release on PC and PlayStation 5. Those interested in participating in the beta can sign up on the game's official website.
