Helldivers 2’s Next Legendary Warbond Is Warhammer 40K, But Don’t Expect Space Marines

Helldivers 2 is preparing to bring the grim darkness of the far future to Super Earth, as developer Arrowhead has confirmed that the next Legendary Warbond will feature a collaboration with Games Workshop’s Warhammer 40,000 universe. This highly anticipated crossover promises to merge the chaotic alien-destroying action of the co-op shooter with the iconic aesthetic of the 40K franchise.

The news was unveiled during the latest Warhammer Skulls presentation, which also highlighted upcoming titles like Boltgun 2 and the new fantasy game Deathmaster. During the stream, Helldivers 2 director Mikael Eriksson confirmed the partnership, expressing the studio's enthusiasm for blending these two distinct worlds.

"At Arrowhead, we believe these two worlds fit perfectly together, and as a studio of diehard Warhammer fans, we are beyond thrilled to see this Legendary Warbond come to life," Eriksson stated.

The Astra Militarum: A Perfect Match

While fans are eagerly anticipating the content, it is crucial to manage expectations regarding the specific factions involved. Although Warhammer 40,000 is famous for its super-soldiers, Space Marines will not be appearing in this crossover. Instead, the collaboration is heavily leaning toward the Astra Militarum, the primary human infantry force of the Imperium.

This decision aligns with the core thematic identity of Helldivers 2. The game’s protagonist soldiers, known as Helldivers, are elite but ultimately expendable grunts who face overwhelming odds. This mirrors the role of the Astra Militarum, who are regular humans sent into battle to sacrifice themselves by the millions against horrific alien threats.

Former Arrowhead CEO and current creative director Johan Pilestedt has previously clarified the studio's philosophy on crossovers. He draws a clear line between what fits the game’s immersion and what does not:

  • The "Yes" List: Factions that are grounded, human-scale soldiers, such as Halo: ODST’s marine corps and Warhammer 40K’s Astra Militarum.
  • The "No" List: Super-soldiers with enhanced capabilities, such as Halo’s Master Chief or Warhammer 40K’s Space Marines.

Pilestedt has emphasized that crossovers must maintain a "1:1 match" in terms of power scaling and narrative fit. Introducing genetically modified demigods like the Space Marines would break the balance and immersion that defines the Helldivers experience. However, players can still expect to wield iconic 40K weaponry, including bolters and chainswords, allowing them to fight like true Imperium soldiers without breaking the game’s core loop.

A Third Major Crossover

This upcoming Legendary Warbond will mark the third major intellectual property crossover in Helldivers 2’s history. It follows previous collaborations with Sony’s Killzone franchise and Microsoft’s Halo: ODST. These partnerships have allowed players to wield iconic weapons and utilize armor sets from these beloved sci-fi universes, expanding the game’s arsenal beyond its original lore.

The collaboration is widely seen as a natural pairing. The Helldivers of Super Earth, much like the forces of the Imperium, are engaged in a relentless war against alien extinction. The shared theme of human resilience against impossible odds makes the Astra Militarum a logical choice for inclusion.

Release Window and Developer Context

Arrowhead has confirmed that the Warhammer 40,000 Legendary Warbond will arrive later this year, though no specific release date has been provided yet.

This announcement comes at a pivotal moment for Helldivers 2. The game has recently undergone significant updates, including the addition of new Exosuits and major balance changes. These updates were deployed while the player base expressed frustration over the game's direction, leading to a dip in Steam user reviews to "Mostly Negative."

In response to community feedback, Arrowhead published a detailed blog outlining their plans to improve the game. Key goals include:

  • Enhancing the meta-progression of the Galactic War.
  • Improving communication with the player base regarding future updates.
  • Addressing long-standing grievances about the premium Warbond structure.

The Warhammer 40,000 crossover represents Arrowhead’s effort to re-engage the community with high-quality, lore-rich content. By focusing on the Astra Militarum rather than the more powerful Space Marines, the studio ensures the crossover remains true to the gritty, sacrificial nature of Helldivers 2 while delivering the dark humor and aesthetic that Warhammer fans crave.
