The battle for the big screen is intensifying as fans prepare for the release of Avengers: Doomsday. In a recent response to Disney's unveiling of "Infinity Vision," Imax has dismissed the new rival theater format as a strategic move designed to bolster the upcoming Marvel blockbuster.

The Clash of Titans: Avengers: Doomsday vs. Dune 3

The industry is bracing for a massive box office showdown on December 18, a date now famously referred to as "Dunesday." This high-stakes release window sees Avengers: Doomsday going head-to::head with the conclusion of the Timothée Chalamet Dune trilogy.

Because Dune 3 has already secured Imax screens for a three-week exclusive, many expected Disney or Warner Bros. to shift their release dates to avoid a direct confrontation. However, Disney used the April CinemaCon 2026 event to signal that they intend to stand their ground by utilizing their own premium large format.

Inside Disney’s Infinity Vision Strategy

While not a direct competitor to Imax in the traditional sense, Infinity Vision is Disney's attempt to establish non-Imax premium theaters as high-quality alternatives. The studio aims to brand specific screens that provide what they describe as the "biggest, brightest, and most immersive cinematic experiences."

To achieve this level of immersion, the Infinity Vision rollout will focus on several key technical elements:

  • Maximum Scale: Utilizing the largest available screens for a massive visual impact.
  • Superior Clarity: Implementing laser projection to enhance brightness and detail.
  • Immersive Audio: Deploying premium audio formats for a fully enveloping soundscape.

The format is scheduled to debut with the September 25 re-release of Avengers: Endgame, providing a testing ground before the arrival of Avengers: Doomsday in December.

Imax Dismisses the 'Marketing Play'

Imax leadership remains skeptical of Disney's new initiative. During a recent investor call, Imax Chief Financial Officer Natasha Fernandes suggested that the announcement was purely a way to compensate for the lack of an official Imax platform for the upcoming Marvel film.

"From our view, we feel it's a marketing play to try and offset the fact that they don't have an Imax platform or brand for Avengers: Doomsday," Fernandes stated, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Fernandes emphasized that the quality of the experience cannot be manufactured through branding alone. "Marvel fans are among the savvy and most discerning moviegoers out there," she continued, adding, "And there's a reason why we're the undisputed leader in premium cinema worldwide."

Whether Infinity Vision can successfully capture the attention of audiences on "Dunesday" remains to be seen.
