It's Time to Step Away from Praising Cosplay Creators

It's time to step away from praising cosplay creators and shine a light on the true heroes of Comic Con — the volunteers who work tirelessly at the cosplay hospital. This week, I wanted to take a moment to appreciate the invaluable service provided by the cosplay hospital at MCM London Comic Con, especially after the recent event that took place from May 22 to May 24. For those unfamiliar, the cosplay hospital is essentially a dedicated space where volunteers are equipped with hot glue, pins, sewing needles, and tape to help anyone experiencing a cosplay mishap.

The Unsung Heroes of Comic Con

At busy events like Comic Con, it's not uncommon for something to go wrong with a cosplay. Whether it's a seam that comes undone or a prop that falls apart, these issues can be stressful to deal with on the spot. Fortunately, the cosplay hospital provides a space where attendees can get help without disrupting the rest of their convention experience.

I've witnessed various temporary fixes for cosplays while wandering around conventions. For example, a pair of friends cosplaying as characters from Genshin Impact were hunched behind a stall, using safety pins to patch up a busted seam. Similarly, a duo of Hazbin Hotel cosplayers were relying on adhesive gemstones after their glued rhinestones had failed them. These moments highlight the need for a dedicated area where such issues can be addressed with ease and professionalism.

The MCM London Comic Con website states that the volunteers at the cosplay hospital are the true heroes of the event. Considering the number of people who likely pass through their doors with damaged outfits and props, they've truly earned that title. It's not just this one established group that makes a difference either. I've seen individuals attend events with the sole purpose of being a cosplay doctor, ready with all sorts of tape, glue, and sewing skills to help in an instant.

These acts of kindness remind us that, despite the diversity of interests and outfits at Comic Con, there's a strong sense of community at the core of these events. If you've ever been a volunteer, helped someone with a fashion mishap, or even thought about packing extra glue or a sewing needle in case someone needs it — thank you. Your contributions have saved hours of stress for creators, allowing them to wear the fruits of their months-long labour with confidence. You're the true heroes.
