It may finally be the moment where Christopher Meloni hangs up his Elliot Stabler hat for good. The actor, who has portrayed the iconic character on and off for an incredible 27 years, issued a heartfelt farewell to fans following the news that Law & Order: Organized Crime cancelled its run.

In a video statement shared via Instagram on Thursday, April 16, Meloni addressed the end of the spinoff series. The show aired four seasons on NBC before transitioning to Peacock.

“I just saw that they announced Organized Crime won’t be coming back,” Meloni said in the video. “I wanted to take this moment to say thank you to the fans who not only helped give the character of Elliot Stabler life and longevity, but for sticking with him and welcoming him back. It was a good ride.”

The End of an Era for Elliot Stabler

Earlier that same day, it was officially confirmed that the series would conclude after its fifth season. This marks a significant shift in the franchise's landscape, as the fifth season was the last time Meloni played the famed detective as a full-time series regular.

While fans might see the character again, the nature of those appearances is changing:

  • Law & Order: Organized Crime: Concluded after Season 5.
  • Law & Order: Special Victims Unit: Meloni will continue to appear, but only in guest or recurring capacities.
  • Original Law & Order: Meloni has appeared in three episodes, though the flagship series has yet to be renewed for Season 26.

A Legacy Within the Law & Order Universe

The news that Law & Order: Organized Crime cancelled marks the end of a massive chapter in television history. Meloni first entered the franchise in 1999, helming SVU for 12 seasons alongside Mariska Hargitay’s Olivia Benson.

Even after his initial exit from the series in 2011, Meloni's connection to the character remained strong:

  • Seasons 22–24: Returned in a recurring capacity.
  • Season 25–Present: Transitioned to guest star roles.

Reflecting on his massive career, Meloni expressed deep gratitude to his audience. “I had a great time playing him. It was a great ride. Thank you. You helped give me a career that I never dreamed of, nearly 17 odd years,” he added.

While the spinoff has come to an end, the broader universe continues to move forward. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit is already slated to return for Season 28 later this year.
