Mafia: The Old Country Is Getting a Story DLC Very Soon
Mafia: The Old Country is set to expand its narrative with the upcoming release of a story-driven DLC titled Man of Honor. The first trailer for the expansion confirmed that Don Salieri, a key antagonist in the original Mafia game, will make a return. This surprise addition marks a significant step for the game, which was initially designed as a more modest, smaller-scale title.
A Glimpse into Salieri's Past
The Man of Honor DLC will add two new story chapters that take place in the middle of the main game’s timeline, specifically during the winter of 1905. These chapters follow Enzo as he helps Ennio Salieri after his release from prison. The expansion will also introduce new weapons, vehicles, and environments, offering players fresh gameplay elements to explore.
In an interview with Polygon, associate design director Josh Zammit explained the decision to revisit Salieri's story before he becomes the infamous kingpin from the original Mafia. “We dive into some of the stories about what [Salieri] was doing beforehand, stuff that players of the previous games won't know,” Zammit said. “Ultimately, his goal to get to America is his driving factor at this point. And maybe that plays into the later story, right? Plants a little bit of a seed in Enzo's head about what he might want to do with his future. That was an interesting thing for us to play with as well — this idea that where did he get this idea of going to the new life? Maybe there was somebody there that was driving it home and sort of eventually it stuck with Enzo as an opportunity as well.”
An Unexpected Expansion for a Smaller Title
The news of the DLC came as a surprise to many, as Mafia: The Old Country was originally released as a $50 title and wasn’t expected to receive major post-launch support. However, the game's success led Hanger 13 to continue developing content for it. In our review, we gave the game an 8/10, praising its return to the linear and tightly story-driven format of the original Mafia and Mafia II, as well as its attention to detail.
