Everything I Learned from Enduring Five Hours of Mud in Gothic Remake
If you've ever found yourself wandering through the Old Camp in Gothic 1 Remake, you're likely to encounter Mud—a character who will quickly become the bane of your existence. This lowly villager, positioned near the castle gate, will ambush you with a request to keep you company. While it's easy to say "why not" out of curiosity, it's also tempting to tell a stranger to piss off, which might be a bit rude. But if you've spent more than a minute with Mud, you'll understand why he's so infamous.
What Makes Mud So Annoying?
Mud is a character designed to be a pest. He interrupts you constantly with random comments and follows you around like a lost puppy. When you try to engage with him, your only options are to tell him to piss off again or to beat him up. Unfortunately, Mud isn't exactly a combatant—he tends to run away from fights. If the Gothic Remake follows the original game's story closely, you won't have to deal with Mud for long, especially if you're not inclined to be mean to him.
After enduring five hours of Mud's presence, I discovered that the only way to stop him from following you is to tell him to go away. If you're not up for a fight, this is the most effective solution. However, if you're feeling particularly cruel, you can beat him up or have him killed in combat—though he rarely stands his ground.
What's the Point of Mud?
Mud's incessant chatter hints at a bigger role. He mentions using you to fight his bullies, putting in a good word for you with the Old Camp, and being hungry. Unfortunately, none of these promises come to fruition, at least not during my five hours of exploring with him. In fact, he repeats these lines at random intervals and locations, making it seem like he's just spouting nonsense.
Despite his annoying nature, Mud can occasionally bug out and get stuck while you're exploring. If this happens, he will eventually reset and reappear at his house in the Old Camp. When I encountered this issue while heading to the Swamp Camp, it was a relief to see him stop following me. While it cut short my scientific experiment, it wasn't all bad.
