While checking my system tray for updates this morning, I noticed a new Game Ready Nvidia driver had arrived. After scanning the notes, I saw something unexpected hidden beneath routine optimizations for Conan Exiles Enhanced. There, tucked away in the text, was the announcement of the 12 GB RTX 5070 mobile configuration.
This previously leaked hardware has finally been unveiled, though with a surprising lack of fanfare. Nvidia’s driver notes indicate that this new variant is a strategic move to handle current market pressures.
Understanding the 12 GB RTX 5070 mobile rollout
Nvidia's announcement highlights that demand for GeForce RTX GPUs remains high while memory supply stays constrained. To maximize availability, the company is introducing this new configuration using 3 GB (24 Gbit) GDDR7 modules.
According to Nvidia: "Demand for GeForce RTX GPUs remains strong, and memory supply is constrained. In order to maximize memory availability, we are releasing the GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop GPU 12 GB configuration with 24 Gb G7 memory."
The company further explained that this release provides partners with an additional pool of memory to complement the 16 Gb G7 supply currently shipping with most GPUs. Key details regarding this update include:
- New Module Size: Use of 3 GB (2GB vs 3GB) GDDR7 modules.
- Expanded Selection: The 12 GB version will exist alongside the current 8 GB configuration.
- Supply Chain Strategy: Aimed at maximizing memory availability and helping partners bring more laptops to market.
Performance expectations and pricing concerns
While Nvidia hasn't hinted at changes to shader counts or the 128-bit bus, a straight module swap is the most likely scenario. Based on my recent testing of 8 GB vs 16 GB graphics cards, I can confirm that having more VRAM can lead to much better performance in certain games.
However, the cost of this extra capacity remains an uncertainty. Laptop provider XMG noted that while this option could theoretically close the price gap between tiers, current market conditions are complicating the math.
"Due to increased graphics memory prices, the 12GB RTX 5070 will approach the price level of the existing RTX 5070 Ti very closely," XMG stated.
This news arrives amid a period of relative silence regarding desktop hardware. While rumors previously suggested that RTX 50-series Super GPUs might see increased VRAM via these same 3 GB modules, those whispers have gone quiet. With reports suggesting no new RTX cards may arrive in 2026, I'll be keeping a very close eye on my system tray for any more "quiet" announcements.
