The Odyssey Tickets Are Being Resold for Hundreds of Dollars

The Odyssey tickets are already being resold for hundreds of dollars, with some listings on platforms like eBay reaching as high as $700. The film went on sale recently, but the ticketing apps were overwhelmed, resulting in long queues, crashes, and frustrated fans unable to secure tickets. Scalpers took advantage of the chaos, securing a large portion of the limited supply and flipping them for a significant profit.

The Limited Availability of 70MM IMAX Screenings

The main reason for the ticket shortage and the high demand lies in the limited number of 70MM IMAX screenings. Christopher Nolan intended for The Odyssey to be seen in this format, as it is the first film ever shot entirely on IMAX. This unique format offers a taller image, higher resolution, and a more immersive experience. However, only 39 theaters worldwide are equipped to show the film in this format, with 24 of them located in the United States.

Most theaters have only one screen capable of displaying 70MM IMAX films due to the high cost and size of the projectors required. As a result, each theater can only host a few showings per day, given the film’s nearly three-hour runtime. This scarcity has only fueled the demand, making it even more challenging for fans to secure tickets to the 70MM IMAX experience.

A High-Profile Release with High Expectations

The Odyssey is one of the most anticipated films of the summer, following the success of Christopher Nolan’s previous film, Oppenheimer, which dominated both the Oscars and the box office. Universal reportedly gave Nolan the creative freedom to make the most expensive R-rated movie of all time, with a production budget of around $250 million. Despite some concerns about potential controversy surrounding the film, such as "historical inaccuracies" in dialogue and armor, the overwhelming demand suggests that The Odyssey is set for a strong box office performance.

The film is scheduled to release in theaters on July 17th, and with the high prices being paid for tickets, it’s clear that fans are eager to see the film on the big screen — especially in the exclusive 70MM IMAX format.
