The ambitious project to port The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind into the engine of Elden Ring has reached a massive new milestone. One of the most Herculean undertakings currently simmering in the modding community just dropped a fresh update, and the progress is nothing short of staggering.
In a recent video, developer InfernoPlus shared a look at the current state of what some are calling "Elden Wind." The update comes with a cheeky dedication to a specific commenter who famously predicted this project would never see the light of day.
A Familiar Sight in an Unfamiliar Engine
The latest footage provides a whirlwind tour of iconic Morrowind locations, specifically Seyda Neen and Balmora. For anyone who grew up in the province, the recognition is instant. InfernoPlus has done a sterling job recreating the atmosphere of the original starting areas within the FromSoftware framework.
The gameplay loop currently allows for several classic interactions:
- Purchasing essential starting gear from Arrille.
- Visiting Addamasartus to liberate held slaves.
- Engaging in combat with local threats.
- Joining the Fighter's Guild in Balmora to hunt rats (and eventually, much more dangerous targets).
The authenticity even extends to the difficulty. In a nod to the classic Morrowind experience, the developer was quickly impaled by a slaver during the showcase—likely due to unoptimized stats—but it perfectly captures the punishing nature of the original title.
Advanced Systems and Technical Achievements
Beyond just visual recreation, the mod is implementing complex gameplay mechanics that push the Elden Ring engine to its limits. One of the most impressive feats is the implementation of a functioning crime and punishment system. InfernoPlus described the difficulty of coding such a feature as being akin to "teaching a dog calculus."
The mod also features:
- Weapon enchantment systems.
- Functional skill training mechanics.
- NPC dialogue featuring era-appropriate "fantasy slurs" like "Fetcher."
- Dynamic NPC interactions, including NPCs that will insult and attack the player simultaneously.
What to Expect Before Release
While the progress is mindblowing, the mod is far from finished. The project still requires significant work before a full release, particularly regarding audio. Currently, the NPCs utilize a charming but clearly placeholder "Microsoft Sam-style" voice, and the developer is looking toward securing proper volunteer voice acting to complete the immersion.
While that skeptical commenter might not be proven wrong just yet, the sheer scale of what has been achieved so far makes this one of the most important projects to watch in the modding scene.
