Philips is bringing its 5K dual-mode gaming monitor to the West, and it comes in a neat white shell. The company has officially announced the Evnia 27M2D5901A, a western counterpart to the Evnia 27M2G5800 which was previously sold exclusively in China. I had the opportunity to experience the screen firsthand at a press event in Croatia, and the dual-mode functionality is genuinely impressive.
This unique display is designed for gamers who want the best of both worlds. It features a 27-inch panel capable of switching between 5120 x 2880 resolution at 165 Hz and 2560 x 1440 resolution at 330 Hz.
The use case for this 5K dual-mode gaming monitor is clear: enjoy stunning, immersive graphics in single-player titles at 5K, then flip to 1440p for competitive play. A 330 Hz refresh rate is excellent for high-end competitive gaming, whereas 5K resolution remains largely overkill for fast-paced shooters like Counter-Strike 2. It also allows users with mid-range PCs to start at 1440p and upgrade their system later to justify the higher resolution.
Unveiling the 5K Dual-Mode Gaming Monitor
While the Chinese version is identical in specs, the western model boasts extra features. Cesar Reyes Acosta, the European Commercial Leader for Philips' sister company AOC, explained the difference during our conversation.
"Ours is the same [as the 27M2G5800], but ours is more equipped," he told me.
The standout addition is Philips Ambilight. The monitor includes lights on the back that sync with game content. This includes Philips' new AI lighting system and Matter compatibility, allowing the screen to communicate with smart home lights. Theoretically, you can have your entire room flash colors when a grenade explodes in-game.
Other notable hardware features include:
- A 65W USB Type-C port for laptop charging and hub power.
- A new OSD that allows for rapid resolution switching.
- A sleek, all-white aesthetic that stands out from typical black gaming gear.
Testing the OSD confirmed that swapping between resolutions is quick and seamless. During my brief gaming session, the 5K resolution provided a killer visual experience that is hard to match.
Design, Pricing, and Market Availability
The Philips Evnia 27M2D5901A is set to launch in July this year. It carries a recommended price of €799. At the time of writing, this translates to roughly $940.
However, there are currently no plans to launch the monitor in the US market. Hopefully, that will change in the future.
For those in the US looking for a similar experience, the Asus ROG Strix XG27JCG is a direct competitor. Both monitors offer 5K dual-mode on a 27-inch IPS panel. However, the Asus model is available for $849, while the AOC/Philips unit would cost north of $900.
The Philips monitor does offer a slight advantage in brightness, hitting 50 nits higher than the Asus rival. You are essentially paying extra for the white design, Ambilight features, and that brightness bump.
Final Thoughts on 5K Gaming
At €799, the price point is steep for an IPS panel. Yet, it is not unheard of for 5K monitors, especially those with dual-mode capabilities.
The technology is still a budding field. While the panel is impressive, the current generation of GPUs often lacks the power to justify 5K gaming at high refresh rates. Additionally, with OLED technology becoming more prevalent, it is hard to go back to IPS once you have experienced it.
Despite the high cost and the OLED comparison, the 27M2D5901A is an impressive piece of hardware. It offers a distinct look and versatile performance for those willing to pay the premium.
