Capcom has officially announced that its brand-new dad-to-daughter space-shepherding action game, Pragmata, has already sold over one million copies in the two days since its launch last Friday. This represents a massive achievement for a new project, particularly one developed primarily by a team of younger Capcom developers that faced three significant delays.
A Long Road to Success: The Development of Pragmata
The journey to launch was far from linear. Pragmata was originally announced in June 2020 with a planned release window for 2022. However, the development cycle eventually stretched out by four years due to various hurdles encountered during production.
While the initial reveal trailer didn't provide much concrete gameplay, Capcom’s new universe hooked players instantly with its surreal atmosphere. The setting features a bizarre mix of elements, including:
-
A ghostly cat
-
A robot girl
-
An astronaut navigating a version of New York located on the moon
Demo Performance and Gameplay Mechanics in Pragmata
As director Cho Yonghee explained to TheGamer last year, the development process involved significant "trial and error and back and forth just to see what could land and what works best." A major focus of this refinement was perfecting the integration of the hacking system.
The developers worked tirelessly to merge Hugh's third-person shooting mechanics with Diana's hacking abilities into one cohesive system. The result is a polished experience that we awarded an 87 in our review, describing the title as "a cult classic in the making."
Before the full release, the Pragmata demo served as a vital milestone, reaching over two million downloads and wishlists. While Capcom's investor relations team noted the demo helped "communicate the unique features of the game to a wider audience," it also proved to players that the game had the "sauce" required to succeed after such a turbulent development period.
While it is too early to tell if this will become a long-term franchise, the strong launch weekend provides plenty of hope for future entries. For now, we are focused on achieving 100% completion and tackling the post-game content.
