Bungie Expands Marathon’s Horizon with New PvE-Only Mode

Marathon director Joe Ziegler has officially outlined Bungie’s strategic vision for the next phase of Marathon, detailing the roadmap for seasons 3, 4, and 5. While recent industry chatter has focused heavily on Steam player counts and Sony’s financial writedowns of the studio’s value, Ziegler’s latest update shifts the focus squarely back onto gameplay innovation and community engagement.

Rather than addressing the "doomerism" surrounding the extraction shooter’s performance, the studio is doubling down on expanding the game’s identity. The upcoming seasons will introduce significant structural changes, including a new map leaning into alien aesthetics and mind-warping debuffs, alongside a new defensive Sentinel runner shell. However, the most pivotal reveal is the introduction of dedicated PvE-focused modes designed to lower the barrier to entry and diversify the gameplay loop.

A Strategic Shift Toward Diverse Playstyles

Ziegler emphasizes that Marathon is evolving to accommodate players who need a break from the intense pressure of competitive extraction gameplay. The goal is to create a more inclusive ecosystem where players can either "go full sweat" or "lean back and chill."

To achieve this, Bungie is experimenting with two distinct modes in the upcoming season:

  • Hybrid PvE/PvP Mode: An experimental mode launching early in the season that integrates light PvP elements with cooperative objectives.
  • Pure PvE Mode: A dedicated cooperative experience where crews are tasked with completing specific objectives and making tangible progress across multiple matches.

This second mode is particularly significant for fans of Bungie’s previous title, Destiny. It allows rival squads to temporarily "lay down their swords," offering a stress-free environment for players who find the standard extraction loop too taxing. Ziegler acknowledges that Marathon currently operates in a singular "stressed" mental mode, and these additions aim to provide novel ways to play that cater to different stress levels and playstyles.

Long-Term Roadmap and Developer Intent

Despite these moves toward cooperative play, Bungie is careful to clarify that this is not an abandonment of its core identity. PvP remains Marathon’s primary strength, and the studio intends to continue testing new mechanics in that arena. The upcoming seasons will see continued experimentation with queues and mechanics, potentially including more purely PvP-focused modes, which could eventually become permanent fixtures in the core game loop.

The transition to a meaningful co-op experience presents design challenges. The existing maps may not naturally adapt to PvE formats due to a limited variety of UESC enemies and boss fights balanced primarily for three-player squads. However, Bungie is expected to dedicate significant design resources to ensure these new modes feel distinct and polished, rather than merely reskinned competitive matches.

What’s Coming Next

Players can expect more details regarding season-specific changes, including faster faction progression and new options to boost runner stats, to be revealed during the week of May 25. As the industry watches closely, Bungie’s willingness to experiment with PvE-only content signals a mature approach to player retention and community growth. By offering options to "cool off" alongside high-stakes competition, Marathon is positioning itself as a more versatile experience in a crowded market.
