For years, fans have suspected a cinematic connection behind one of gaming's most iconic protagonists. Now, the truth is officially out: Resident Evil's Leon S. Kennedy was indeed named after a classic 1994 French action film.
The Confirmation from Hideki Kamiya
The long-held fan theory has been settled by none other than Hideki Kamiya. The Resident Evil 2 director recently took to X to casually confirm the connection in response to a fan highlighting the apparent references within the series.
Kamiya's confirmation puts an end to much of the speculation regarding the character's origins. It turns out that the link between the survival horror legend and French cinema is much more direct than many realized.
How Resident Evil's Leon Got His Name
The naming process was a collaborative effort involving some of the biggest names in gaming history. According to Kamiya, the idea came about during a brainstorming session with Resident Evil creator Shinji Mikami.
Mikami had reportedly shot down several different name ideas for the character before Kamiya offered his suggestion. Drawing from recent viewing, Kamiya proposed a name inspired by the film Leon: The Professional, directed by Luc Besson.
"Well, why don't we just take it from that movie I watched the other day," Kamiya said (via Google Translate). According to the director, Mikami simply replied, "Yeah, that works," and the rest is history.
The Inspiration: Leon: The Professional
The 1994 film is a cornerstone of the action genre, featuring a highly recognizable cast. When considering the inspiration for Resident Evil's Leon, it is impossible to ignore the talent involved in the original movie:
- Jean Reno
- Gary Oldman
- A young Natalie Portman
This unexpected crossover between French cinema and Capcom's legendary franchise remains one of the most interesting "accidental" tributes in gaming history.
