It feels almost rude how Apex Legends can tease such an incredible concept only to pivot back to the familiar. The recent cinematic trailer for Season 29, titled Overclocked, showcased a glimpse of a battle racer that left fans craving much more than just a new hero reveal.
The Missed Potential of a Hero Battle Racer
Games like Destruction AllStars and Onrush were deeply underappreciated titles that deserved far more players than they ever received. I have long maintained that the continued lack of a "hero" formula in racing or derby games is a crime against the genre.
The brief glimpse of a high-speed race in the trailer was incredibly memorable. It showcased a world that felt ripe for expansion, featuring:
- A Mad Max inspired aesthetic.
- The rugged, obstacle-filled landscape of Salvo.
- High-octane movement that felt distinct from standard shooter gameplay.
Why Axle is an Exciting Addition to Apex Legends
While we aren't getting a brand-new game mode, the new character, codenamed Axle, looks like an awesome addition to the roster. As an Octane main, her inherent need for speed is immediately appealing to those who love high-mobility legends.
I haven't been this excited about a new playable character since the arrival of Valkyrie in Season 9, who brought a similar focus on specialized movement through the skies. While I know Respawn isn't going to abandon the battle royale format for a racing spin-off, the narrative draw is too significant to ignore.
A Warning to Respawn
You cannot tease the idea of a hero battle racer within the Apex Legends universe and expect fans to forget how amazing that concept is. For now, the developers are off the hook, but I will be watching closely for any further expansion of this universe.
