It has been well over a decade since 2015’s Arkham Knight delivered a proper new Batman action experience. Fans have been left waiting for a successor to that high-water mark, but that drought is officially coming to an end on May 22. When Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight hits digital storefronts, it promises much more than just a standard family-friendly adventure.

After getting roughly two hours of hands-on time with this new Lego Batman epic, one thing is clear: it feels as much like a brand-new Arkham game as it does a traditional Lego title.

Familiar Combat and Gameplay Mechanics

The parallels between the two franchises become obvious almost immediately. My session began with a confrontation against Carmine Falcone's thugs at the Iceberg Lounge, and the control scheme felt instantly recognizable to long-time fans. The fundamentals remain consistent:

  • Square button: Execute attacks
  • Triangle button: Counter enemy strikes
  • X button: Evade or jump over enemies

As you progress through the story, you will unlock various gadgets and additional moves designed to make every brawl feel more dynamic. While these encounters lack the punishing difficulty found in the Rocksteady titles—since Lego games aren't typically built for extreme challenge—the flow of combat is incredibly satisfying.

Exploring a Dynamic Gotham City

The sense of familiarity extends far beyond the combat arenas. Once you step out into the massive open world of Gotham City, the gameplay loop feels remarkably polished. You can glide through the skyline and use Batman's signature grappler to zip across the environment with ease.

Even the vehicular segments tap into that classic Batmobile feeling, allowing players to drift around corners in a Lego-styled version of the vehicle seen in Robert Pattinson’s The Batman.

Is This The Arkham Successor We Need?

While the aesthetic similarities between the Arkham series and this new release are notable, the true value lies in the engine and execution. It isn't just about seeing a different version of Gotham; it is about the smooth gameplay that defined the legendary Arkham trilogy.

If you have spent any time playing the previous Batman titles, Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will feel like a natural evolution. It captures the movement and mechanical fluidity of its predecessor while delivering the charm essential to the Lego franchise.
