Inside the Spider-Man: Brand New Day Script Pages
In an unprecedented move, Marvel has released the first three pages of its upcoming film, and the Spider-Man: Brand New Day script pages reveal exactly how the movie begins. The opening minutes incorporate much of the footage seen in the record-breaking first trailer, but the script offers much deeper insight.
With handwritten details added by director Destin Daniel Cretton, the script provides a glimpse into Peter Parker's new, isolated reality. Published by Entertainment Weekly, the script opens right at the Marvel Studios title card. It specifically highlights "the memories Peter no longer shares with Ned and MJ and Aunt May," following the memory wipe at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Cretton’s notes even add a cinematic comparison, noting that Peter has "vanished from existence like Marty [McFly]" in Back to the Future. For the first time, the script emphasizes that Peter is entirely alone.
A Lonely Life Without Stark Tech
Over the studio logos, we hear Tom Holland's Peter Parker reading the letter he wrote MJ at the end of the last film. The setting remains the dingy apartment where we left him, though there is a timeline shift to consider. While this scene takes place only nine months after No Way Home, the bulk of the movie takes place four years later.
The Spider-Man: Brand New Day script pages also introduce a new element to Peter's solo survival: EV, an AI he has inexplicably created. Because he no longer has access to Stark technology, his gear is entirely DIY. Key details regarding his new setup include:
- A complete lack of Stark money or high-tech gadgets.
- The use of a "3D printer on steroids" to fabricate homemade tech.
- EV serving as the closest thing Peter has to a friend.
As Peter navigates this life, he sees mementos of MJ and Ned, including a notification of Ned's first day at MIT. This emotional weight is punctuated by his famous line: "Maybe I just need to be Spider-Man."
New Threats and Emerging Plot Details
The script hints at physical changes occurring within Peter as well. He experiences a "small sharp headache," which the script describes as an inkling that living in the shadows is taking its toll. This likely foreshadows a new phase in his life-cycle, potentially involving the cocoon seen in previous trailers.
As the script concludes with a "BEGIN MONTAGE:" prompt, fans are speculating on the arrival of several villains. It is logical to assume this montage will feature smaller-scale threats such as:
- Boomerang and Tarantula.
- Tombstone (Marvin Jones III).
- Scorpion (Michael Mando).
Beyond the initial pages, much remains uncertain regarding the film's larger scale. Rumors are swirling about the inclusion of The Hand (a ninja monk clan), a transformation for Bruce Banner into the Savage Hulk, and the potential arrival of Frank Castle (The Punisher). We also await news on the character played by Sadie Sink.
We will have to wait until July 31 to see the full story unfold in theaters.
