The ambitious collaboration between industry veterans and one of gaming's most iconic tabletop franchises has come to an abrupt end. In a disappointing turn for fans, the Dungeons & Dragons game developed by Giant Skull has officially been canceled.
The End of the D&D Project
Back in June 2025, Wizards of the Coast announced a high-profile partnership with Giant Skull, the studio helmed by Stig Asmussen. As the director behind heavy hitters like Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order and God of War III, Asmussen was expected to bring significant prestige to the project. The goal was to deliver a "single-player action-adventure title" set within the rich lore of the D&D universe.
However, just shy of the one-year anniversary of that initial announcement, the project has been scrapped. According to reports from Bloomberg, both Hasbro (Wizards of the Coast's parent company) and Giant Skull have confirmed that the untitled title is no longer in development.
Why Was the Dungeons & Dragons Game Canceled?
While the cancellation is a blow to enthusiasts, Wizards of the Coast clarified that the decision was made during the early stages of the creative process. In an official statement, the company explained:
- "We assess concepts at every stage of development."
- The decision was made not to pursue an early concept provided by Giant Skull.
- Wizards of the Coast maintains "great respect" for Stig Asmussen and his team.
Despite this setback, the relationship between the two entities remains intact. A spokesperson for Wizards of the Coast indicated that they are still actively reviewing new pitches from Giant Skull regarding potential future projects. While this specific Dungeons & Dragons game won't be making it to consoles, the partnership shows no signs of total dissolution.
