Warning: This review contains full spoilers for Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord Episodes 5 and 6!
Anyone who has made it this far into the series will know that Maul: Shadow Lord is more an ensemble drama than a simple tale of a Sith Lord's return to power. While Sam Witwer's Maul remains at the center of the conflict, the show places immense importance on characters like rogue Jedi Devon Izara (Gideon Adlon) and conflicted detective Brander Lawson (Wagner Moura). This Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord Season 1, Episodes 5 & 6 Review finds that the ensemble is more than capable of carrying the weight when Maul himself retreats into the shadows.
The Empire Arrives in our Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord Season 1, Episodes 5 & 6 Review
The primary takeaway from this dual-episode batch is how quickly things turn bleak once the Empire gets involved. There is a palpable sense of urgency fueling the plot now that the protagonists are scrambling to deal with the arrival of Inquisitors. The stakes have shifted from Maul grooming an apprentice and Lawson pursuing a criminal kingpin to everyone being in the crosshairs of something much more terrible.
No character benefits more from this shift than Lawson. His struggle is far more compelling now that his worst nightmare has come true: the Empire is actively hunting him and his son (Charlie Bushnell). As the series continues to allude to Lawson's complex, sordid past and his troubled relationship with his estranged wife, he has transitioned from a mere foil for Maul into a truly compelling protagonist.
Character Spotlights: Devon Izara and Brander Lawson
While Maul takes a backseat in these episodes, the supporting cast shines. Devon Izara continues to grow with every episode, even when she isn't interacting directly with the former Sith Lord. We see a certain recklessness and a rising darkness within her as she makes a noble effort to protect the Lawsons from Imperial reach. She is rapidly becoming the show's most fascinating mystery.
Key highlights from these episodes include:
- Maul’s impactful return during the Episode 6 climax.
- The graceful and memorable lightsaber training sequence.
- The introduction of more dialogue for the character Marrok.
- The increased tension brought by the arrival of the Inquisitors.
As Jesse Schedeen noted in his previous assessment:
"Maul: Shadow Lord is still coalescing and developing in Episodes 3 and 4. The series hits a few lulls here whenever it focuses strictly on Maul jockeying for power in the criminal underworld. That's a story whose endpoint is already established. But luckily, the series is able to find more narrative weight by focusing on its supporting cast, particularly the giant question mark that is Devon Izara. Episode 4 also ends in a thrilling climax, one that offers up plenty of stellar action and the promise that this story is going to become much more dramatic very quickly now that the Empire has arrived on the scene." — Jesse Schedeen, 04/13/2026
The Mystery of Marrok and the Inquisitorius
It is fascinating to see Marrok (A.J. LoCascio) back in the spotlight following his live-action debut in Ahsoka Season 1. While he remains a devoted Jedi killer without much personality yet, he does have actual dialogue this time around. It will be interesting to see how the series connects his role in the Thrawn conspiracy to his service under Vader.
One lingering question remains from the final scene: to whom was Marrok speaking? As a member of the First Brother rank, only the Grand Inquisitor and Vader himself sit above him in the hierarchy. It would be incredible to see either character appear, or perhaps even witness a long-awaited duel between Vader and Maul before the series concludes.
