If you have grown weary of survival games where a stick and a rock can automatically be combined to make an axe, it might be time for something more authentic. Wordless Forest is a unique live-action survival game that offers a level of realism rarely seen on Steam. This is because its creator actually ventured into the deep woods for weeks on end to capture every moment.
Solo developer Dogus Cagrici serves as both the star and the cinematographer for the project. He recorded all the footage himself while hiking alone through the real wilderness. The result is a visceral experience that blurs the line between gaming and documentary.
The grueling production of this live-action survival game
The creation of the game was a massive undertaking that required Cagrici to endure the elements for 40 days. He traveled through the dense forests and wilderness of four different cities across Turkey, often without any modern comforts.
"Without a production vehicle, I hiked for kilometers carrying heavy camera gear on my back just to reach remote locations," Cagermci explains. His journey was far from a simple hike; it was a true test of endurance.
The developer faced significant environmental threats while filming:
- Dangerous wildlife: He operated in territory shared with brown bears and wild boars.
- Extreme weather: In Muğla, he waded through freezing rivers in soaking wet clothes.
- Treacherous terrain: In Antalya, he filmed alone on the edges of deadly cliffs.
The physical toll of this journey is evident in the final product. As Cagrici puts it: "The exhaustion on screen is 100% real."
High-stakes gameplay and branching paths
In Wordless Forest, players are tasked with making life-or-death decisions. The gameplay relies on a choice-based system where your actions determine if the character survives the night or meets a grim end. For instance, you must decide whether to approach a mysterious noise in the woods or stay hidden.
The trailer for the game showcases several intense scenarios that could result in an immediate "game-over." Players might witness the character:
- Attempting to start fires and eating raw fish.
- Drinking directly from puddles to survive.
- Falling from massive cliffs onto jagged rocks.
- Being dragged lifelessly down heavy river rapids.
A silent, immersive experience
True to its name, the game is completely dialogue-free. This lack of narration creates a deeply immersive atmosphere similar to survival films like Cast Away, All is Lost, and Inside. Without voiceovers or dialogue, players must rely entirely on visual information to navigate the character's struggle.
While FMV (Full Motion Video) exists in the horror genre, a pure live-action survival game is incredibly rare. A search of SteamDB for survival games with the FMV tag yields very few results, making this project a standout entry in the genre.
Wordless Forest has been in development for nearly three years and is slated to release on Steam this August.
